Warning! Spoilers for Sinister War #1 ahead!

In the first issue of Marvel Comics' Sinister War featuring Spider-Man, it appears as though Peter Parker is finally going to remember his One More Day reboot and the dark deal he made with the devil. Long seen as one of the most controversial Spider-Man stories of all time, One More Day saw Peter Parker and Mary Jane cutting a deal with the demon lord Mephisto in order to save the life of Peter's Aunt May. However, the consequences of the deal resulted in a massive reboot of Spider-Man's history, and it seems as though those effects are still being felt in the current Spider-Man era. However, it seems as though the Webslinger will soon remember the deal he was made to forget, and it's possible that the massive retconning might soon be retconned itself.

Desperate to save Aunt May after a bullet meant for Peter struck her instead, Peter and his wife Mary Jane were approached by Mephisto. In exchange for the saving of May's life, Peter and MJ had to give up their marriage to one another, which led to some massive retconning of Spider-Man's personal continuity. Furthermore, Spider-Man was made to forget that the deal ever took place, though feelings of guilt and sorrow would inexplicably remain. However, this forgotten deal is coming back to haunt Spider-Man in the form of the demonic Kindred, a version of Harry Osborn who had died before the One More Day reboot happened. As a result, recent issues have seen Kindred tormenting and scheming against Spider-Man, trying to force him to remember the deal he made.

Now, Sinister War #1 from writer Nick Spencer and Mark Bagley sees the issue hinting that Spider-Man will indeed remember his devil's deal and marriage he once had. Not only is Doctor Strange himself confronting Mephisto and gambling to save Peter Parker's soul, but in the midst of Spider-Man trying to deal with the battle between the Sinister Six and Savage Six, Mysterio seemingly confirms that he knows all about the deal, claiming that it's the cause for everything that has been happening recently thanks to Kindred.

With Mary Jane having been captured by the Sinister Six at Kindred's request, the stakes are high for Spider-Man. However, they're only going to get higher once he remembers one of the darkest chapters of his past. While One More Day was received with some pretty negative responses due to the regressive reset of Peter Parker's life, it's very likely that he may indeed get back on track with Mary Jane when and if he manages to defeat the threat of Kindred and all of the villains he's assembled in recent issues.

If Spider-Man does indeed remember One More Day as this issue is teasing, it would certainly be a major note for Nick Spencer to end his run on the Weblinger that began in 2018. However it all plays out with the epic finale, it's clear that Spider-Man's status quo is going to be changing in some pretty big ways. With Sinister War and only a few issues left from Spencer before a new era begins, here's hoping Spider-Man's soul and the devil's deal he made can be redeemed.
