In a newly released promo trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home, a dialogue between Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina) was revealed to reference Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man. Spider-Man: No Way Home starring Tom Holland as Spider-Man, explores a deeper glimpse into the multiverse in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film takes place after the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home, with Peter Parker asking Doctor Strange for help after his identity was exposed to the world, but the sorcerer's spells go wrong, leading to the introduction of the multiverse.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is the third MCU installment of Tom Holland's Spider-Man trilogy, featuring different multiverse villains from past Spider-Man films with Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire. Alfred Molina will be reprising his role in Spider-Man: No Way Home as Doc Ock with the help of digital de-aging technology, after being last seen as the main antagonist of Spider-Man 2 of the Sam Raimi trilogy. Alongside Doc Ock, familiar faces from past Spider-Man eras will also come back in the film, including Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe) and Electro (Jamie Foxx).
In the newly released promo from Sony Pictures UK for Spider-Man: No Way Home, the trailer features a conversation accompanying Doctor Strange asking if Doc Ock knows a Peter Parker who's Spider-Man and if Doc Ock can recognize Tom Holland as his universe's Peter Parker. The scene makes reference to Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man, with Doc Ock unable to recognize Tom Holland's Spider-Man as the Peter Parker he knows in his universe. Later in the trailer, Doc Ock is seen held captive in the undergrounds of the Sanctum Sanctorum, with Peter Parker, MJ (Zendaya), and Ned (Jacob Batalon) teasing Doc Ock's full name. With the ongoing rumors of the possibility of both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield returning to reprise their respective roles as Spider-Man, Spider-Man: No Way Home showcases the return of Molina as Dr. Otto Octavius. Spider-Man 2 concluded with Doc Ock's redemption by sacrificing himself in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, which left many fans wondering how he would be re-introduced in Spider-Man: No Way Home since his return takes place after Spider-Man 2. Previously, Molina revealed that in early discussions between him and director Jon Watts, Watts explains that the resurrection of Doc Ock will pick up after the events in Spider-Man 2 as "in this universe, no one really dies."
Since the first teaser for Spider-Man: No Way Home, both Sony and Marvel Studios have been very discreet with the details of the upcoming film. While there are many speculations and theories surrounding Spider-Man: No Way Home, we can expect to unequivocally see the return of many of the previous antagonists from past eras of the Spider-Man franchise and the introduction of the multiverse in the MCU. Spider-Man: No Way Home is scheduled to be released on December 17, 2021, with tickets going on sale Monday, November 29, 2021.
