The second Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer didn't confirm the involvement of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's versions of Spider-Man. The build-up to Spider-Man: No Way Home has been dominated by what hasn't been shown. With the film confirmed to be exploring the multiverse thanks to a spell-gone-wrong by Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), there have been countless rumors regarding Maguire and Garfield both returning.

Those rumors only intensified when Doc Ock (Alfred Molina) and Electro (Jamie Foxx) were confirmed to return in Spider-Man: No Way Home, meaning that, regardless of which Spider-Men do appear, both Maguire and Garfield's era would be represented in the movie. For their part, both actors have repeatedly played coy on the casting rumors and said they aren't involved, although few believed them.

After speculation, reported leaks, and theories, Spider-Man: No Way Home's trailer still didn't confirm Maguire and Garfield in the movie. Their versions of the characters don't appear in the trailer alongside Tom Holland's web-slinger, failing to reveal that No Way Home would have all three movie versions of Spider-Man teaming up. Of course, this could mean that Sony Pictures is hoping to keep a lid on everything until the movie actually releases next month. But with anticipation ramping up, and the amount of alleged leaks increasing, it would make sense for Sony to put the speculation to rest once and for all by confirming Maguire and Garfield for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

With uncertainty over the involvement of Maguire and Garfield, there's risk of disappointment if they aren't actually in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Likewise, by continuing to hide them when most people assume they'll be in the movie anyway, there's a lot riding on their "surprise" appearance as the pull of the movie, rather than how they factor into the story. Ultimately, that matters far more: that Maguire and Garfield are in No Way Home wouldn't be a shocking revelation at this point, but there can still be plenty of surprises in terms of how they're used and what other Marvel characters make appearances.

The Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer not spoiling Maguire and Garfield being in the movie may not slow down the "leaks," but hopefully, the next month of reveals won't damage the hype in any way. Given how things have been going with leaks, it's likely becoming increasingly difficult for Sony to keep things under wraps, and it's much better to properly reveal things on their own terms (and in HD) so they can take back control of the narrative around the movie. Still, the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer gives just enough of a tease to suggest their inclusions without spoiling anything about their roles.
