This post contains SPOILERS for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Former Disney CEO of the Walt Disney Company Bob Iger congratulates Tom Holland on the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home on Christmas morning. In addition to having the highest audience score in Rotten Tomatoes history, No Way Home has become Sony Pictures' biggest domestic release ever. Much of the film's success is due to the MCU's multiverse theory and three generations of Spider-Man cinema, the latest of which revolves around Holland's web-slinger.

Following Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy and Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man films, Sony (who owns the rights Spider-Man characters) and Disney/ Marvel Studios reached a deal in 2015 to incorporate Peter Parker/Spider-Man into the MCU. Propelled by a deal spanning five movies, Holland made his MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War before starring in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home. Weeks after the latter's release, news broke contract negotiations had broken down, and Spider-Man's MCU tenure was essentially over. Thankfully, Disney/Marvel Studios and Sony eventually came to their senses, and now, No Way Home is the biggest film since Endgame.

Iger, who helped cast Holland, took to Twitter on Christmas Day to congratulate his Spider-Man on the success of No Way Home. Before wishing the 25-year-old actor a Merry Christmas, the former Disney CEO/current executive chairman referred to a fateful phone call. Check out the tweet below:

After contract negotiations broke down in 2019, fans around the world expressed outrage that Holland's Spider-Man would no longer be a part of the MCU. As the story goes, Holland was just as upset as everyone else and, after a pint or two, voiced his disappointment to Iger, which was one of many conversations aimed at remedying the situation. The resulting deal saw the studios co-finance a third MCU Spider-Man, No Way Home, and allow Holland to appear in at least one future Marvel Studios film. Suffice to say, if it weren't for Iger (and Holland), one of the most notable films in the history of superhero cinema may not have existed.

For the very few people who haven't seen No Way Home, the multiversal film brings characters from Sony's past into the MCU—from Alfred Molina's Doc Ock and Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin to Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man (s). No Way Home is an ode to Spider-Man, a character arguably responsible for kicking off the contemporary age of superhero movies. The future of Holland and Spider-Man is uncertain. Parties involved have said they are actively developing Spider-Man 4, although Holland might be ready to take a break now that the Homecoming trilogy has concluded. Regardless, everyone is glad that Iger, who effectively retires at the end of the year, had those conversations about Spider-Man.
