Tom Holland has recently quipped that his latest performance in Spider-Man: No Way Home will win him an Academy Award. Holland, who first made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War as the world’s favorite friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, has since gone on to reprise the character another five times, including headlining his own solo Spider-Man trilogy. His latest web-slinging adventure, Spider-Man: No Way Home, is currently wowing audiences worldwide and has become the third-highest worldwide box-office opening of all time behind Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Plans for Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy had been in place as early as 2017, before his first solo outing in Spider-Man: Homecoming had even been released. Originally director Jon Watts had hoped to introduce Kraven the Hunter as the chief antagonist of the third film. In 2019, however, Marvel Studios’ deal with Sony was in jeopardy, and for a while it seemed that the third Spider-Man film would not be connected with the broader MCU, and would instead be integrated into Sony’s own burgeoning shared cinematic universe. Yet thanks to the appeals that Holland had personally made to Disney CEO Bob Iger and Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman, the two companies returned to the negotiating table and a new deal was struck.

With Holland and his fellow co-stars now busily promoting their latest outing, THR recently sat down with the Spider-Man star, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon about the new film. When Holland was asked what the future had in store for his version of Peter Parker after Spider-Man: No Way Home, the actor admitted that he does not “know the answer to that question.” He went on to jokingly suggest that he’s “going to win the Oscar for this movie.” Check out his full comments below:

"I do know that I love this character, and I would be sad to say goodbye. But I have achieved basically everything I wanted to achieve as this character, I really think I’m going to win the Oscar for this movie. So there, it’s great."

While Holland’s comments about winning an Oscar were clearly made in jest, they do bring to mind Marvel boss Kevin Feige’s recent comments about “a genre bias that certainly exists” within the entertainment industry concerning superhero films. While Marvel Studios had previously enjoyed success at the 2019 Academy Awards with a record-breaking seven nominations for Black Panther, by and large, superhero films have not traditionally fared well at the Academy Awards outside of the technical awards categories. Of course, rival comic house DC has seemingly performed much better in the Awards circuit, with both The Dark Knight and Joker earning Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix Oscars for their respective performances as versions of Gotham’s Clown Prince of Crime.

While it seems unlikely that Holland’s latest performance as Peter Parker will earn him a much-coveted golden statue, any potential disappointment will undoubtedly be drowned out by the enormous acclaim Spider-Man: No Way Home is generating among fans. As one of the few people lucky enough to don Spider-Man’s iconic costume in an official capacity, and as the head of a multi-billion dollar franchise, Holland certainly has more to brag about than most award-winning actors. No doubt Holland’s fans will continue to provide him with even more bragging rights as Spider-Man: No Way Home goes on to smash box office predictions.
