An official image from Spider-Man: No Way Home shows Tobey Maguire suited up as his version of Spider-Man/Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most recent blockbuster. Maguire debuted as Spider-Man in Spider-Man nearly two decades before showing up in the MCU. He would go on to reprise the role in Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3 before the Spider-Man/Peter Parker role went to Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man films. Then, after Garfield's run as the character, Tom Holland would eventually pick it up in the MCU during Captain America: Civil War before his first solo film, Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Prior to the release of No Way Home, a variety of entries in the MCU introduced the idea of the Multiverse. Specifically, Loki proved that different versions of the same character—Variants—could exist across timelines within the Multiverse. Thus, when it became clear that Holland's Spider-Man/Peter Parker was going to ask Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to tamper with reality in No Way Home, the prospect of Maguire and Garfield reprising their roles as Spider-Man/Peter Parker alongside Holland in the MCU seemed feasible.

A recent Tweet from the official Spider-Man: No Way Home Twitter account features Maguire's version of Spider-Man during the film's climactic final battle. Maguire's and Garfield's involvement in Holland's third solo outing as Spider-Man in No Way Home was kept highly under wraps before the film's release. But, with the film having been out in theaters for over two months, Marvel Studios has begun to release official images of Maguire and Garfield as their respective versions of Spider-Man.

With Maguire's Spider-Man last appearing on-screen around a decade and a half ago, his return to the iconic role was welcome and exciting. Furthermore, since Maguire's Spider-Man did not get a fourth film of his own, plot threads from the character's life were touched on in No Way Home, such as his relationship with Mary Jane/MJ Watson (Kirsten Dunst), who expressed interest in reprising the character. Ultimately, while No Way Home still centered on Holland's Spider-Man, the addition of Maguire and Garfield to the fray effectively connected with generations of Spider-Man fans.

Maguire and Garfield returned to their respective timelines at the end of No Way Home, but their appearance in the MCU has set a precedent for other actors who play characters that already exist in the MCU to show up in other Marvel entries. The Doctor Strange sequel, Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, is already set to heavily feature the Multiverse and Variants. Plus, with Maguire and Garfield making it clear that they're willing to participate in the MCU, either of their second MCU appearances could be coming sooner than expected in Doctor Strange 2. Until then, official images of Maguire and Garfield as Spider-Man are beginning to become plentiful as Spider-Man: No Way Home nears its official digital release.
