Tom Holland has teased an unknown mystery character appearing in the upcoming MCU film Spider-Man: No Way Home, detailing a scene he has called “one of the coolest ever." The British actor was cast as the new Peter Parker in 2015. Holland debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America: Civil War and has since gone on to play the web-slinger in five appearances, including two of his own solo movies; Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, both directed by Jon Watts. The MCU version of Parker is younger and less-experienced than his previous iterations, but has had the benefit of mentorship from the Avengers and Tony Stark specifically.

The upcoming third MCU Spidey film, Spider-Man: No Way Home is set to see Peter come across foes and threats from across the multiverse. Following the reveal of his identity by Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio at the end of Far From Home, Peter seeks the help of Doctor Strange to help clear his name. In a universe-altering spell, the naive hero accidentally winds up opening up the Marvel multiverse. While most of the resulting plot remains under wraps, its been confirmed that Alfred Molina will return as Doctor Octopus from the original Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies to battle the hero, and he is not coming alone.

In an interview with Empire, Holland discussed, with uncharacteristic restraint, Spider-Man: No Way Home and its hype. In particular, the youthful leading man highlighted a scene which he claims is his coolest ever, involving an unnamed mystery character interacting with Peter. While he could only tease fans at the identity of the person, Holland explained that the scene features a tableside interaction between him, Marisa Tomei’s Aunt May, Jon Favreau’s Happy Hogan and said unnamed character. The four are said to be discussing what it means to be a hero, leading to speculation about who this source of wisdom might be. Read Holland’s full quote below:

“[it’s] one of the coolest scenes I’ve ever shot […] It’s four people sitting at a table, having a conversation about what it’s like to be a superhero, and it was amazing […] The other day we watched the scene, my brother and I, and our jaws were on the floor.”

Tom Holland in Spider-Man No Way Home and Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man 3

Recent footage from the highly anticipated blockbuster has revealed the return of Molina’s Otto Octavius, only further adding to speculation about the possibility of a Spider-Man team up involving all three cinematic iterations of Peter Parker. Viewers are convinced that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will be returning to help Holland in a huge crossover, with multiple villains from the three series set to return too. Alongside the Raimiverse’s Doc Ock and images of the original pumpkin bombs once handled by Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, one of the first casting announcements for the film was Jamie Foxx; who reprises his role as Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Holland’s comments could be referring to one of the other Spider-Man, with Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker an obvious candidate. Maguire’s personal and emotional version of the character was known for scenes discussing the notion of heroism, and the importance of great power and great responsibility. Alternatively, the mystery character could be any number of individuals already established in the MCU; an Avenger or a cosmic hero.

In a week where Sony tweeted three spider emojis, seemingly referring to the multiverse speculation, Holland’s reference to a mystery character only add to the building anticipation. Holland’s notoriously loose-lipped approach to spoilers seems to have turned around as he has recently kept very quiet about the upcoming film, but these tantalizing comments will be sure to fuel excitement ahead of Spider-Man: No Way Home's premiere.
