The Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield iterations of Spider-Man have long been rumored to be appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home and a trio of posters might have secretly revealed the two former Spider-Men. Though a new trilogy of Tom Holland Spider-Man movies has been announced, No Way Home was made to tie all previous MCU Spider-Man films together in a final, crowd-pleasing movie. With the confirmed reappearance of supervillains from the two previous Spider-Man franchises, No Way Home looks to be a film that honors Spider-Man’s film history, past and present, though the reappearance of Maguire and Garfield’s beloved iterations of the web-slinger is curiously unconfirmed.

Spider-Man’s first major cinematic outing was in 2002, with Sam Raimi raising the bar for superhero films as both cinematic experiences and comic adaptations. Even in the age of the MCU-dominated pop culture, few superhero movies match Raimi’s Spider-Man, and none surpass it. Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man duology is also beloved by Spider-Man fans, introducing Andrew Garfield’s iteration of the web-slinger. At different points in the MCU’s history, the Maguire and Garfield versions of Spider-Man nearly became canonical parts of the MCU, but the franchise finally received its Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, with Peter Parker being played by Tom Holland.

Likely aware of many fans’ assumption that the two previous Spider-Man actors will appear in No Way Home, Sony and Marvel Studios have stubbornly refused to confirm or deny their potential appearances in the film, frustrating some fans while increasing the excitement in others. No Way Home’s latest trio of posters each depict Spider-Man facing a multiverse villain, and while the posters each focus on their respective villain, they may also secretly include a different iteration of Spider-Man.

The Doctor Octopus poster appears to feature Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, whose high-tech costume has a smooth appearance with a subtle web pattern. The poster featuring the Green Goblin looks like it includes Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man, in his The Amazing Spider-Man 2 suit from 2014. The suit is a faithful recreation of Mark Bagley’s Ultimate Spider-Man suit and notably features large eye lenses. Spider-Man’s lenses are particularly prominent on the Goblin poster. Spider-Man is quite blurry on the Electro poster, but he could be the Tobey Maguire iteration of the web-head, though he’s missing an important detail, if this is the case. Maguire’s Spider-Man suits had a raised, silvery, web pattern that ought to reflect light on the poster.

Assuming that Maguire and Garfield return in No Way Home, the film’s marketing appears to almost tease fans at times, regarding their reappearance. In a recent video promoting Spider-Man: No Way Home’s tickets going on sale, Tom Holland introduces “two very special friends,” who turn out to be Zendaya and Jacob Batalon (MJ and Ned Leeds), prompting Holland to sarcastically ask, “Who else would it be?” The film’s marketing is clearly aware of the Maguire and Garfield rumors and is playfully maneuvering around the subject.

If the Maguire and Garfield iterations of Spider-Man do appear in No Way Home, the film’s marketing is waiting until after its premiere to acknowledge the two previous Spider-Man iterations. Both versions of Spider-Man have significant fanbases, and their inclusion could overshadow Tom Holland’s story and characterization. Secretly including the both Maguire's  and Garfield's version of Spider-Man in the latest Spider-Man: No Way Home posters, however, matches the self-aware marketing that the film has used so far.
