Andrew Garfield shares the behind the scenes story of the now-iconic Spider-Man: No Way Home version of the pointing meme featuring himself, Tobey Maguire, and Tom Holland. It's been well over two months since three Spider-Men swung across the big screen in No Way Home, yet excitement for the film remains incredibly high. Directed by Jon Watts, the MCU flick arrived in theaters last December and broke numerous records with its $260 million opening; globally, No Way Home now stands at $1.8 billion, making it the 8th highest-grossing movie of all time.

Much of the enthusiasm behind No Way Home stems from its multiversal premise, which allowed for multiple past Spider-Man actors to join the MCU. Before the film's release, Sony really only revealed villains like Alfred Molina's Doc Ock and Jamie Foxx's Electro. However, fans weren't fooled: Holland's Peter Parker predecessors Maguire and Garfield also had roles in No Way Home, making for the ultimate Spider-Man team-up. With the secret well and truly blown, Sony recently began capitalizing on Maguire and Garfield's roles in No Way HomeFirst up came a picture fans had long been waiting for, in which the three Spider-Man actors recreated the popular online meme where different Spider-Men point at each other in recognition.

Garfield recently opened up about how that picture came to be while speaking to ET on the red carpet at the SAG Awards. When asked about who decided to take it, Garfield admitted it was always bound to happen. However, when the time came to take the picture, they were lucky to get the final shot! Garfield said:

"Oh, no, it was always gonna happen. I think everyone was like, 'How do we do the meme? How do we do the meme?' So before we shot anything, we just did a photoshoot of the three of us pointing at each other. And I knew they must've got one good shot, because we were all just cracking up so much. We couldn't quite contain ourselves."

Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire in the final battle of Spider-Man No Way Home

Fans were already using the original Spider-Man meme online to describe No Way Home, so it's very fitting that the actors came together to make a real-life version of the picture. Since No Way Home was released, fans have been treated to an excess of content featuring Holland, Maguire, and Garfield, and that's a big reason why love for the movie remains strong. Seeing the three actors together is something that may never get tiring for longtime Spider-Man fans, and it's sweet to see how much they've all bonded over this character. It's no wonder they were all laughing so hard while taking the No Way Home picture; it had to be a surreal moment.

Right now, the futures of the three Spider-Men are somewhat murky. Holland is likely to return for the already-in-the-works Spider-Man 4, and there have been rumors of varying reliability swirling about Maguire and Garfield coming back for additional projects of their own. Based on how enthusiastic fan responses to Spider-Man: No Way Home have been, there's no question that Maguire and Garfield would both be welcomed back with open arms. Until something is officially announced, though, that pointing meme may be the last time fans see them in their Spidey suits.
