The writers of Spider-Man: No Way Home talk about one of the biggest plot holes in the film. Marvel Studios and Sony's latest collaboration was both a critical and box office success, but it also left several questions regarding its story. Most of them stem from the fallout from Doctor Strange's (Benedict Cumberbatch) final spell.

After his secret superhero identity was exposed in Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) reached out to the sorcerer for help. But while he was more than happy to offer assistance despite a stern warning from Wong (Benedict Wong), Strange's involvement somehow made things worse as it exposed Earth to interdimensional villains. In the end, Peter was forced to make a bigger sacrifice — let Doctor Strange cast a spell that essentially stripped him of his identity as the wall-crawler and his human alter-ego. It's still uncertain how exactly the specifics of the spell worked, leaving fans wondering about them.

Appearing on IGN Fanfest, Spider-Man: No Way Home writers Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna addressed one of the prominent questions regarding the film's ending: what happened to the physical evidence of Peter Parker's existence? That includes official records and even personal belongings. The pair said that they've had extensive talks about how exactly Doctor Strange's spell worked, and they have an answer to this query. Unfortunately, they're just not at liberty to reveal now.

McKenna: "We talked about that a lot… and we can't divulge much, but just know we talked about it a lot and there were conversations about it. And I will say answering those questions by the end of the movie, felt like it would be almost too much to have to explain that, in this movie. So I would hope that it's one of those details that I feel like would've been a bridge too far for us to have to explain in this movie. But we have thoughts and answers"

Sommers: "We deliberated a lot… is it going to be like a Back to the Future kind of thing? Or are people going to be disappearing from photos? Are physical objects going to be disappearing? All these things. And like Chris said, ultimately, we decided that it would take so much time and real estate in the movie to explain all of that. It would just detract from the emotion of it.

McKenna: Believe me, we have answers to it… but I don't think we're... We're not allowed to divulge that. But we have answers."

It's understandable that both McKenna and Sommers can't openly talk about the ramifications of Spider-Man: No Way Home's ending. It effectively launches the next phase of Peter's MCU arc and will more likely be integral to Spider-Man 4 which is now in active development. But, naturally, fans are wondering about these details considering that the threequel didn't really have any time to explain the extent of the sorcerer's final incantation in the movie. Based on the writing duo's comments, however, it seems like the public will have to wait to get the answers to their queries. But for what it's worth, Doctor Strange is getting heat from his choice to meddle in the wall-crawler's issues as hinted by Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' trailer.

Holland has been open about wanting to take a break for a while after doing a series of projects. So, if Marvel Studios and Sony want to finally address these lingering questions left by Spider-Man: No Way Home, it might not even be in MCU Phase 4. It's possible that Spider-Man 4 won't happen until Phase 5, which isn't going to start until a couple of more years. But, at least it does seem like the studios already know how to address these loose plot holes.
