Spider-Man: No Way Home's chances of earning a Best Picture nomination at the 2022 Oscars are less likely following the film's snub at the PGA Awards. Released in December 2021, Spider-Man: No Way Home received universal critical praise as it balanced telling an emotional, heartfelt story with the genre thrills audiences have come to expect from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fueled by enthusiastic word-of-mouth and a multiverse storyline that saw Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reprise their versions of Peter Parker, No Way Home also broke box office records and grossed over $1 billion worldwide.

In wake of the film's overwhelming success, there was talk of No Way Home possibly earning a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars. With the Academy expanding the Best Picture field to a guaranteed 10 spots, many felt there would be an opportunity to recognize No Way Home and boost the award ceremony's waning viewership ratings. Sony and Marvel kicked off an Oscar campaign in earnest, pushing No Way Home for nominations across the board. Unfortunately, those efforts might prove fruitless.

Per Deadline, the nominations for the 2022 PGA Awards were announced. Spider-Man: No Way Home missed the cut of 10 nominees for their version of Best Picture, the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures. Dune was the only big-budget tentpole to make the list. Other titles like King Richard, West Side Story, and Don't Look Up bolstered their odds. See the list in the space below:

The PGA Awards are typically a strong indicator of what will be nominated at the Oscars. Their lists don't always match up perfectly, but there's typically overlap. Last year, seven of the eight Best Picture nominees were also nominated at the PGA Awards (The Father being the lone outlier). In 2019, all nine of the Best Picture nominees were on the PGA's list. When Black Panther scored its groundbreaking Best Picture nomination a few years ago, it had previously earned accolades from the PGA, Golden Globes, and other bodies. There's always a chance Spider-Man: No Way Home surprises and breaks through at the Oscars, but history indicates it will miss out.

There are always notable Oscar snubs, but Spider-Man: No Way Home would arguably be a glaring omission. It was the biggest movie event of 2021, serving as a boon for a theatrical marketplace still trying to recover amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to its widespread popularity, No Way Home was also well-received, with some arguing it's even the best Spider-Man movie ever made. Considering the impact No Way Home had on audiences and the industry as a whole, it would be a shame if the Oscars didn't celebrate it by giving it a Best Picture nomination. The Academy is trying to improve ratings by finding the right host (ironically, Tom Holland is a possibility), but making Spider-Man: No Way Home a Best Picture nominee would be a better step in the right direction.
