Spider-Man shoots a web at a Mysterio scarecrow in a No Way Home car commercial. Jake Gyllenhaal was introduced as the former Stark Industries employee and holographic illusions expert Quentin Beck who masquerades as the superhero Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home. After he is recruited by Nick Fury to help Spider-Man stop the Elementals, he is later revealed to be the film's primary antagonist. Now, with No Way Home set to include a slew of past Spider-Man villains, rumors of Mysterio's return have been heating up.

No Way Home will pick up right where Far From Home's mid-credits scene left off as Peter Parker's (Tom Holland) secret identity is revealed through a message Mysterio recorded before his supposed demise, which J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons) then broadcasts to the world. After his life is turned upside down, Peter seeks the help of Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to restore his secret identity through magic. However, his spell goes awry which incidentally opens a portal to the Multiverse, allowing multiple villains from alternate realities to make their way into the MCU such as Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), and Electro (Jamie Foxx).

Marvel Studios and Hyundai are continuing their partnership for the upcoming MCU film, Spider-Man: No Way Home. In a brief clip from an upcoming commercial called Only Way Home directed by Jon Watts and premiering on November 22, Spider-Man is seen strolling down a country road when he suddenly shoots a web at a scarecrow wearing Mysterio's signature fishbowl helmet. While this could be an innocent ad that has no bearing on the actual movie, the fact they tapped the No Way Home helmer to direct it could be a sign it might actually tie into the upcoming MCU movie. Ever since it was clear No Way Home would be using the multiverse as a shortcut to introducing the Sinister Six, fans began theorizing about Mysterio's return considering he is one of the original members in the comics.

Though Mysterio purportedly perished at the end of Far From Home, the entire character is based around deception and lies, so it would be fitting for him to fake his death and return at a later point, though the MCU doesn't have the best reputation regarding fakeout deaths. Spider-Man and Mysterio also have unfinished business from the last film considering he's the one who started this whole mess, not to mention that he claims to hail from the multiverse. Whether or not Gyllenhaal's villain does return, No Way Home is probably already the most anticipated non-Avengers movie Marvel has ever made.
