Spider-Man: No Way Home's trailer may have a secret Miles Morales link. Marvel Studios and Sony finally drop the first official look at the much-anticipated blockbuster which confirms a couple of rumored plot points. That includes how Spider-Man: No Way Home's main narrative tackles the multiverse, set up after Loki's ending.

With only four months to go before it hits theaters, the promotional campaign for Spider-Man: No Way Home has started fairly late. The threequel has long since wrapped up principal photography, and despite the recent reshoots, Marvel Studios and Sony could've easily dropped the first trailer months ago. Surprisingly, the almost three-minute clip reveals several important story details. For starters, it deals with the aftermath of Mysterio's (Jake Gyllenhaal) malicious dying speech in Spider-Man: Far From Home which not only outs Spider-Man's (Tom Holland) real identity but also frames the hero for his death. This forces Peter Parker to seek help from Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), whose attempt to resolve the issue, unfortunately, makes it worse. While only Alfred Molina's Doc Ock physically appeared in the trailer, there were also hints of Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin and Jamie Foxx's Electro, among others.

Assuming that rumors of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire's involvement pan out, Spider-Man: No Way Home will feature three different iterations of the web-slinging hero. But a fourth one could also appear in Miles Morales. In the recently-released trailer, there's a shot of Peter talking to a woman inside a limousine in the middle of what appears to be a traffic jam. This is also featured in the pre-video snippet which makes it stand out more. However, there's no provided context for this scene, making it difficult to predict what's going on, or perhaps, even quickly dismiss it as a filler frame. However, the lady in the car is played by Paula Newsome. The Barry actress was reported to have boarded Spider-Man: No Way Home, alongside returning villains, back in April 2021 but there's no word on who she's playing. Months later in July, a fan posited two possibilities on Twitter regarding her role: either she's playing Miles' or MJ's (Zendaya) mother. The latter poses an interesting idea since Spider-Man: Homecoming has already established the existence of Miles in the MCU with the brief appearance of his uncle, Aaron Davis (Donald Glover).

Spider-Man No Way Home Trailer Peter and Woman in Car

That being said, it's unwise to quickly dismiss the likelihood that she is playing MJ’s mother instead. Given the aforementioned shot in the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer, it makes more sense for this to be the case. As Doctor Strange cast the spell that would result in the rest of the public forgetting that he is Spider-Man, Peter's mind quickly went to Zendaya's MJ, who may become Mary Jane Watson, and how it would essentially erase her knowledge of his secret and memories of their romance. Depending on when the scene with Newsome actually takes place, perhaps Peter is attempting to reach out to MJ in an effort to explain himself. While the car doesn't have any other passengers, it's possible that Marvel Studios simply digitally erased MJ. After all, they've done this to preserve the secrecy surrounding their projects.

As exciting as it is to introduce Miles in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it might be too much for the movie considering its already many moving pieces. Tackling the multiverse while setting up and introducing the Sinister Six is already an ambitious narrative that could easily be the premise of three different movies. Adding more to it could make the threequel too convoluted and overstuffed. Newsome's character being connected to MJ instead makes more sense.
