Despite being a pivotal portion of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the historical Spider-Man team-up should not happen again, and here’s why. The superhero blockbuster Spider-Man: No Way Home revolves around Peter Parker (Tom Holland) dealing with the aftermath of his identity’s revelation. After Doctor Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) spell goes awry, the multiverse opens, and a meeting twenty years in the making finally occurs. However, it will be more fitting if, moving forward, that encounter — no matter how momentous — is treated as a one-time event only.

With Peter’s personal life now exposed to the public, Spider-Man: No Way Home highlighted the inevitability of him losing his loved ones. As he grieved the death of Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), he found comfort and support from his multiverse brothers: Peter-Two (Tobey Maguire) and Peter-Three (Andrew Garfield). Together, they continued fighting for the greater good and developed cures for the Spider-Man villains, bonding over shared secrets, responsibilities, and painful experiences. For months preceding the film’s release, this assembly of Peter Parkers was the subject of fans’ speculation and rumors, in spite of vehement denial from the cast. Consequently, the arrival of previous Spider-Man actors in No Way Home, although not entirely surprising, still evoked an enthusiastic reaction from viewers.

While Peter-Two and Peter-Three sharing a screen with MCU’s Peter in No Way Home has met fans’ expectations, their Spider-Man team-up should not happen again. This is primarily to preserve how special of a moment it was. If that will be repeated in future Spider-Man movies, its impact will decrease, and what is supposedly an experience attributed only to watching No Way Home will ultimately become commonplace in the MCU. This might also lead to viewers expecting cameos and collaborations in every upcoming Marvel project, and possible backlash if they are left disappointed. Moreover, there is a possibility that the Peter Parkers of various universes will only be gathered for fan service, with no regard to the development of the characters and the plot.

Spider-Man Maguire Garfield Holland

Meanwhile, the Spider-Man team-up in No Way Home was different, since it was necessary for Peter’s coming of age. Had it not been for Maguire’s and Garfield’s characters providing understanding and encouragement, Holland’s Peter might not have been steered away from a vengeful path. As such, the ending of No Way Home was changed entirely. The presence of the older Peters kept their youngest brother in check and guaranteed that he would learn how to carry the weight of his responsibilities, whatever the cost would be. Although that decision eventually stripped Peter-One of virtually everything and everyone in his life, No Way Home truly shaped him into a hero, even beyond the Spider-Man suit.

Furthermore, Spider-Man: No Way Home felt like a celebration of the three Spider-Man generations. For most of the film’s audience, seeing the different iterations of Peter Parker interact was a dream come true. As it was a historical moment reflecting their childhood and teenage years, it brought nostalgia and comfort to millions of viewers amidst the pandemic. While fans would definitely love to see another Spider-Man team-up, it should not be repeated anymore, for it was a defining chapter in the origin story of MCU Peter. With the multiverse being a mine of endless opportunities, Spider-Man should only move forward, focusing on his renewed purpose as the friendly neighborhood superhero.
