The new Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer might've edited Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield out of the original movie footage. The second Spider-Man:: No Way Home trailer arrived courtesy of a special fan event, revealing proper first looks at Green Goblin and Jamie Foxx's new-look Electro, but the multiverse Spider-Men were conspicuous by their absence.

Marketing for Spider-Man: No Way Home started fairly late, with the first trailer not dropping until late August 2021. Still, it was surprisingly liberal with its revelations. Aside from confirming how the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home factor in the threequel, it also set up its multiversal narrative and the arrival of multiple villains from both Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies and the Amazing Spider-Man timeline. Now, Spider-Man: No Way Home's second trailer expands on that, showing other bad guys from other universes, including the first look at Willem Dafoe's returning Green Goblin, Rhys Ifans' Lizard and Thomas Haden Church's Sandman alongside Doc Ock.

So, if villains from previous Sony Spider-Man films can show up in Spider-Man: No Way Home, how come their respective heroes don't? Despite persistent rumors that Maguire and Garfield will be in the film, they have yet to be revealed. But it's possible that they were actually in the new Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer — just strategically edited out. The Brazilian teaser for No Way Home seems to show Lizard being punched by an invisible opponent, suggesting Holland's Peter is not along when he fights five villains at the same time. That would suggest that both Maguire and Garfield are edited out of the scene, explaining why the villains appear to be fighting thin air. Looking at how it was shot, it could be a highlight scene in the film, similar to the Avengers' running shot in Avengers: Age of Ultron's opening.

Spider-Man reaches for MJ in Spider-Man No Way Home.

It's also possible that at least Garfield's version of Spider-Man is involved in MJ's (Zendaya) falling scene. Seeing Holland's Peter trying to save her as she falls from the top level of the construction is definitely reminiscent of Gwen Stacy's (Emma Stone) emotional death in Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 2. But while the MCU couple was initially filmed from a wide-angle shot, it then cut to a close-up of their hands reaching out to each other. While it makes sense that Holland's Spider-Man tries and saves his girlfriend, there's also a chance that Garfield's iteration swoops to help as it evokes memories of his mistake in his own universe. Aside from saving MJ, it allows Garfield's Peter to redeem himself from that error that cost him Gwen. It would be an emotional moment that both benefits the MCU's future storytelling, as well as, The Amazing Spider-Man 2's narrative.

Marvel Studios is known to digitally alter shots in their trailers in an effort to preserve its secrecy. Some shots used in promo clips don't end up in the theatrical cut, while other frames are edited to remove a particular character or element. Sometimes they even shoot material purely for promotional purposes. Knowing full well how big of a deal Maguire and Garfield's involvement is in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it's likely that they ultimately decided to keep their cameos hidden until the film is out in theaters.
