The first trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home sparked a variety of theories, including one that suggested Sony and Marvel were hiding Tobey Maguire in plain sight, but the second trailer debunked this theory. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is now on its Phase 4, which is not only continuing the stories of already established characters and introducing new ones, but it’s also exploring darker and more complex concepts, most notably the multiverse. This has already been addressed in Loki, but it will be explored deeper in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

After his identity was revealed by Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, and he was also framed for his murder, Spider-Man: No Way Home will see Peter Parker (Tom Holland) dealing with the aftermath of this chaos. Searching for a way to keep his loved ones safe, Peter will ask Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to cast a spell that makes everyone forget he’s Spider-Man, but the spell won’t go as planned, and instead, they will open the gates to the multiverse. The first trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home confirmed the multiverse and the arrival of Electro (Jamie Foxx) and Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina), but it also left fans wondering about the rumored appearances of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, making way for different theories.

One theory focused on Tobey Maguire suggested that he was hiding in plain sight in a scene at the end of the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer. In it, Holland’s Peter Parker comes across Doc Ock, who says “Hello, Peter” as he spots the young hero. Fans theorized that wasn’t Holland’s Peter and instead he was Tobey Maguire’s version, but his face was edited to not reveal his involvement yet. The main detail supporting this theory was the suit Peter is wearing, which looks like the one Maguire wore in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, and of course, the way Doc Ock greeted Spider-Man, as the old enemy he is to him.

Tom Holland in Spider-Man No Way Home and Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man 3

As interesting as the theory is, the second trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home has now debunked it by expanding on that scene between Doc Ock and Holland’s Peter Parker. In it, Doc Ock attacks Spider-Man and the latter removes his mask, to which Doc Ock reacts with “you’re not Peter Parker”, further confirming that he comes from Raimi’s universe and he fought a completely different Spider-Man. However, this doesn’t mean that Maguire (and Garfield) can’t be in Spider-Man: No Way Home, as the second trailer made way for new theories on how they are being hidden in plain sight. The one that has been gaining force suggests that Maguire and Garfield were digitally removed from the scene towards the end of the trailer where Holland’s Spider-Man is seen jumping towards Electro, Sandman, and Lizard, as the latter is jumping towards an invisible rival, one below the Spider-Man shown on screen.

Although the Tobey Maguire theory from the first Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer has now been debunked, fans are not losing hope in seeing him back in action with the two other Spider-Men that the big screen has seen, and if he really is part of the movie, it’s going to be interesting to see how and when he arrives in Holland’s timeline and what his dynamic with him and Garfield’s version will be (and, depending on when he shows up, his dynamic with Doc Ock as well).
