Sony Moves Quickly To Take Down Spider-Man: No Way Home Leaks Online

Sony is reportedly working quickly to take down legitimate leaks of Spider-Man: No Way Home online. The upcoming MCU film is arguably the most anticipated film of the years as it wraps up Tom Holland's trilogy as Peter Parker. Aside from that, it will also tie together three generations of Spider-Man movies, with classic villains from both Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy and Marc Webb's Amazing Spider-Man films appearing.

In order to preserve the secrecy around the film, Sony and Marvel Studios ran a restrained marketing campaign for Spider-Man: No Way Home. The first trailer for the movie didn't arrive until late August 2021, with its second one dropping a couple of months later. Since then, a barrage of TV spots and posters were rolled out offering fans an idea of what to expect from the threequel. Despite this, there are still a lot of things unknown about the narrative, and the persistent rumors about surprise characters appearing, including former Spider-Men Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, have made fans all the more intrigued.

While the North American release of Spider-Man: No Way Home won't be until Thursday (December 16), the movie has already hit theaters in various international markets. According to THR, the film's global premiere has already led to a string of leaks, which Sony is now scrambling to take down from the internet so as not to spoil the film for other viewers. The outlet naturally didn't specify what was in the leaked footage, but confirmed that "they were significant, legitimate spoilers." One leaked scene was reportedly "nearly 10 minutes of the film," while most of the leaked had "foreign subtitles while some had a foreign dub." The quality of the clips apparently range from "super grainy to quite clear," but Sony has apparently been successful in taking down a significant chunk of the leaked footage.

During the lead-up to its release, Spider-Man: No Way Home has been plagued with supposed leaks. Fake, fan-made videos and images of Garfield, Maguire, and Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock/Daredevil (who was also rumored to make an appearance), were consistently shared online. While it was virtually impossible to track the original source of these materials, making them unverifiable, fans dissected and discussed them tirelessly. Even Spider-Man: No Way Home's producer, Amy Pascal, admitted that it was tricky to keep these so-called leaks at bay. Meanwhile, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige cautioned fans not to be too invested in the rumors, as it could lead to disappointment in the case that their hopes didn't pan out in the film.

The reported Spider-Man: No Way Home leaks online are somewhat a testament the massive anticipation for the movie. Unfortunately, considering how easy it is to upload content online these days, Sony is fighting an uphill battle if they try to take down every single clips that surfaces on the internet. But while the studio can't track down every single person who shares segments from the film, they can at least appeal to the other fans to veer away from checking them out. Hopefully, this won't be too difficult to do, since most fans understand that Spider-Man: No Way Home will be best enjoyed on the big screen, completely spoiler-free, just as Marvel and Sony intended it.
