Fan art jokes that it was John Cena who punched The Lizard in a recent Spider-Man: No Way Home teaser. Peter Parker will certainly have his hands full in the newest Spider-Man epic as the multi-verse explodes onto the screen, bringing with it a whole collection of bad guys culled from previous Spider-Man cinematic adventures.

Of course what fans really want to know is whether Peter will have any help in taking on Doc Ock, The Sandman, Electro, The Lizard and Green Goblin. It seems only fair that if the Spider-Verse is opening up, No Way Home would also include a visit from one or both previous movie Spider-Man actors. Unfortunately there have been nothing but denials when it comes to speculation about Andrew Garfield and/or Tobey Maguire showing up to help Peter fight all those villains. However, fans remain unconvinced and indeed more fuel was recently thrown on the fire thanks to a Brazilian teaser for Spider-Man: No Way Home featuring a strange moment in which The Lizard appeared to get punched by someone invisible. Fans couldn’t help but speculate that in the actual movie it’s a former Spider-Man who punches The Lizard, and the people who made the trailer simply did an awkward job of cutting around this particular fact.

The mystery of who punched The Lizard will no doubt remain just that until No Way Home finally arrives in theaters and clears everything up. In the meantime, fan artists are having their own fun guessing who might have roughed up the bad guy character in the trailer. One piece of art from Samuel Cheve went way outside the box in coming up with a culprit, blowing right past Garfield or Maguire and heading straight to someone who isn’t even in the MCU. Cena may indeed be ubiquitous on the pop culture landscape right now but the chances of him being the one who punches The Lizard in Spider-Man: No Way Home are obviously zero. Cena of course could easily punch The Lizard, either as Venom or Spider-Man, but unless No Way Home is way crazier than folks think, it’s not him doing the deed.

Ultimately the Lizard punch is probably a case of fans reading too much into a strange moment in a trailer as they look for evidence to support the outcome they dearly wish for. Chances remain that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker will have to go it alone in fighting the movie’s motley crew of bad guys. Of course there’s always that outside chance that a Maguire and/or Garfield surprise is in the offing for Spider-Man: No Way Home, and it’s understandable that fans would hold out so much hope for such a thing. A true Spider-Verse wrap-up to the MCU Spider-Man trilogy would truly be epic.
