Andrew Garfield gushes about his experience working with Tobey Maguire on Spider-Man: No Way Home. The most recent movie picks up where Far From Home leaves off, and sees Tom Holland’s Spider-Man struggling after his identity is revealed. As a result of a spell gone wrong, heroes and villains from across multiple dimensions are pulled into Holland’s Spider-Man universe. Previous Spider-Man actors, Maguire and Garfield, are seen returning to their roles as alternate Peter Parkers.

This movie was subject to many rumors and leaks about its content prior to its release in December 2021. Despite these, Garfield repeatedly insisted that he wasn’t in No Way Home. Maguire’s appearance was also kept quiet, many of his castmates denied working with both these actors throughout the production. Over the last few years, Maguire had taken a leave of absence from acting. His most recent performance before No Way Home was The Boss Baby in 2017, choosing to focus more on producing projects than acting.

Garfield eagerly talked about his experience working with Maguire for Spider-Man: No Way Home while on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show. He revealed that he was disappointed with Maguire’s disappearance from acting, as he was such a big fan. Garfield was able to spend a few weeks before filming workshopping the characters with Maguire and developing their relationship. Garfield wanted to hone in on a brotherly relationship between the pair and was delighted with the bond he and his co-star were able to create between their respective Peters. "It felt protected. It was very strange. It didn't feel like we were doing this big Spider-Man film. It felt like Tobey and I were really just working on a relationship between two characters and using our imaginations and playing. It felt very, very playful, like we were kind of two friends making a little Spider-Man short film and going, ‘Wouldn't this be cool?’… I think he really started to remember his connection to acting as well, his love of it, as if no time had passed."

The cast has been very vocal about having enjoyed the experience, in particular Garfield. Fans will be happy to know that their real-life counterparts get along just as well as their characters do. The actors shared what Garfield called a beautiful experience when he and Maguire snuck into a movie theater together, where Garfield was able to see the film for the first time. The actor is eager to keep working with Maguire and Holland on more projects as he’s invested in the “three-brother dynamic” the trio developed for the movie.

This was Maguire’s first acting role since 2017 and he has recently been working on two new acting projects: Extrapolations and Babylon. Perhaps this confirms Garfield’s theory that Maguire reconnected with his passion for acting through Spider-Man: No Way Home. Audience can look forward to seeing more from Maguire soon, as both his new projects are set for release later this year.
