Spider-Man: No Way Home star Tom Holland opens up about the highly-anticipated Marvel movie, explaining how it represents the end of the Homecoming trilogy. Ever since he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the role of Peter Parker, Holland has been involved in some of the MCU’s biggest moments from Captain America: Civil War to Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. But there’s a case to be made that his upcoming outing in No Way Home will be his biggest yet.

Set to debut in theaters on December 17, the third installment in the franchise directed by Jon Watts will pick up after Peter’s identity is revealed at the end of Far From Home. With his life turned upside down, Peter asks Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to help restore his secret identity with magic. But, as teased in the record-breaking No Way Home trailer, this fix doesn’t seem to go according to plan. Zendaya, Jon Favreau, Jacob Batalon, and Marisa Tomei will all be reprising their roles from the previous Homecoming movies. Additionally, they’ll be joined by Alfred Molina and Jamie Foxx as Doctor Octopus and Electro, respectively. The addition of Molina and Foxx, who have played those villains in previous Spider-Man franchises, has led to plenty of speculation about what the Marvel movie will consist of.

In new comments shared with EW, Holland has definitely added to that speculation. The actor confesses that, while filming, No Way Home was treated as the end of the Homecoming franchise which began in 2017. He went on to explain that, if the actors were lucky enough to reprise their roles in the future, they’ll be playing very different versions of their characters. Holland’s quote is included below.

“We were all treating [No Way Home] as the end of a franchise, let’s say. I think if we were lucky enough to dive into these characters again, you’d be seeing a very different version. It would no longer be the Homecoming trilogy. We would give it some time and try to build something different and tonally change the films. Whether that happens or not, I don’t know. But we were definitely treating [No Way Home] like it was coming to an end, and it felt like it.”

Appearances from Foxx and Molina aren’t the only thing fueling the speculation about the MCU film. Rumors have persisted that previous Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will put on their old superhero masks for a cameo in No Way Home. And it’s worth noting that Holland stops well short of addressing those rumors. But it is clear that, in this early promotional push, Holland wants to stress that the film’s events will be significant.

Upon its release, the trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home garnered 355.5 million global views in its first 24 hours. With those numbers, it easily surpassed the previous record set by Avengers: Endgame at 289 million views. It speaks to the popularity of Spider-Man and the positive impression Holland has made in his time as Peter Parker. Thankfully, fans won’t have to wait too much longer for the film’s debut.
