Spider-Man: No Way Home picks up immediately where Far From Home left off, confirms Tom Holland. During the previous movie's mid-credits scene, J.K. Simmons makes his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as J. Jonah Jameson after portraying him in Sam Raimi's trilogy, immediately establishing himself as an adversary to Holland's Spider-Man by broadcasting doctored footage of the London incident in which Quentin Beck, aka Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), frames him for his murder and exposes his secret identity to the world.

Based on the trailers and synopsis, it has been known that Far From Home's credits scene would serve as the inciting incident for the events of No Way Home. After his life and reputation are turned upside down, Peter turns to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) for a magical solution to this mess, though his bumbling during the spell causes it to go awry and accidentally break open the multiverse. This allows Spider-Man villains from alternate universes to enter the MCU. They are Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), and Lizard (Rhys Ifans).

While it has been assumed that No Way Home will pick up directly in the fallout of Far From Home's credits scene, the two movies are more connected than initially thought. During a recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Holland confirmed the Spider-Man threequel will pick up immediately where the previous film left off. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige also corroborated his comments in the movie's recently-released press notes. Read both of their quotes below, courtesy of Collider:

Holland: What's cool about this film is it picks up right after the second one finishes. So the second one finishes with a freeze-frame of Spider-Man, the third one starts with the same freeze-frame.

Feige: No Way Home starts immediately after the events of Far From Home, which was always something we wanted to do in a story – start right immediately at that moment. We’re finally able to do that here, and it doesn’t go well for Peter. As he starts his senior year, it is very chaotic and a dichotomy to where we met him in Homecoming, walking into his sophomore year.

Peter Parker looking surprised in Spider-Man: Far From Home

It has been assumed that No Way Home would pick up in the aftermath of Far From Home's surprise reveal, though Holland and Feige's comments now leave no need for speculation. By doing so, No Way Home will be able to depict Peter's further reaction and intimately explore the effect that his secret identity being exposed to the world has had on his life and his closest relationships with MJ (Zendaya), Ned (Jacob Batalon), Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), and Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau).

Fans might remember that Far From Home's credits scene ended right as Peter was reacting to his identity being exposed, letting out a loud "What the f-," cutting to black before he can curse, continuing a gag from Homecoming.  With this revelation that the next movie will pick up right there, the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man might get his chance to finish that line. Spider-Man: No Way Home recently received a PG-13 rating from the MPAA, which allows for the use of one f-bomb.
