An extended cut of Spider-Man: No Way Home dubbed “The More Fun Stuff Version” is coming to theaters this Fall. As the final installment in Jon Watts's Homecoming trilogy, Sony/Marvel Studios’ No Way Home was released in theaters last December and quickly became one of the most successful comic book movies ever. After breaking box office records, the film is now the sixth highest-grossing film of all time—which is thanks in part to its multiversal concept and the satisfying arc of its Peter Parker(s).

Following the events of Spider-Man: Far From HomeNo Way Home sees Tom Holland’s Peter dealing with the aftermath of Mysterio revealing his secret identity to the world. In an attempt to ease the impact on his friends and family, Peter goes to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and asks him to make the world forget he’s Spider-Man. Unfortunately, the spell goes awry, bringing villains from the franchise’s past into the MCU, including Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), Lizard (Rhys Ifans), and Electro (Jamie Foxx). Fortunately, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s web slingers also show up to help with all that great power and responsibility. Now, in celebration of 60 years of the comic book character and 20 years of Spider-Man films, all three Spider-Men are returning to theaters.

Audiences couldn’t get enough of No Way Home the first time around and ate up the film’s behind-the-scenes footage and/or interviews. Suffice to say, an extended version of the blockbuster should do well in theaters over Labor Day weekend. As previously mentioned, No Way Home is currently the sixth-highest-grossing title worldwide and the third-highest-grossing movie nationwide. Depending upon how it’s tallied, a re-release could push the film past the $2 billion mark worldwide and make it even more formidable on “all-time” lists.

By bringing together three generations of Spider-Men, No Way Home pays homage to its main character and superhero cinema. Its initial release not only hearkened back to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man (2002) but revitalized cineplexes during the pandemic era without the help of the Chinese market. It's akin to Avengers: Endgame (2019) and Avatar (2009) as a historic film and the one to re-watch in celebration of 60 years of Spider-Man. Still, Sony announcing an extended cut of their most successful film less than a week after Morbius’ re-release flopped might be more than a coincidence.
