Warning: This post contains MAJOR spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

No Way Home producer Amy Pascal explains how the new movie's devastating ending can set up Spider-Man 4At long last, Spider-Man: No Way Home has arrived in theaters, and the powers that be at Marvel and Sony are definitely celebrating. Not only was this film one of the most hyped of the year, No Way Home has officially scored one of the best opening weekends of all time with $253 million domestically and $587 million worldwide. This also comes alongside some glowing critical reviews and an A+ CinemaScore from audiences, making it the fourth MCU film to earn such a score.

Spider-Man: No Way Home has a lot for fans to discuss, including its devastating ending. Much of the film sees Peter Parker (Tom Holland) grappling with the ramifications of having the world know he's Spider-Man. Though Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) gave him an out via spell near the beginning, Peter balked at the idea of having everyone - including his loved ones -  forget the truth. However, with the multiverse splintering at an alarming rate, Peter makes the biggest sacrifice of all during the Spider-Man: No Way Home ending and agrees to have Doctor Strange complete the spell, thus making the world forget he ever existed. That includes MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon), his two best friends.

That's a pretty shocking conclusion for Spider-Man: No Way Home, but it leaves a whole host of possibilities for its sequel. Speaking to The New York Times, longtime Spidey producer Amy Pascal touched upon how Peter's game-changing decision can set up Spider-Man 4. While she didn't give specifics, she did hint Peter is in a unique place for his next film. Pascal said:

"You see Spider-Man make a momentous decision, one that you've never seen him make before. It's a sacrifice. And that gives us a lot to work with in the next film."

In the same interview, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige confirmed Spider-Man 4 is already in the very early stages of development. Prior to Spider-Man: No Way Home, there was a lot of uncertainty over whether it would be the final solo movie for Holland's iteration of the webslinger. While Holland hinted his time as the character could be coming to a close, Pascal confirmed there were ideas for another Spider-Man trilogy with him in the lead. At the very least, fans can now count on Spider-Man 4 to further Peter's story.

While it's far too soon to now just what Spider-Man 4 has in store, Pascal's comments are intriguing. No Way Home left Peter in his most vulnerable place yet, which presents some new challenges for his next adventure. How he chooses to process the fact that no one remembers who he is will guide the story for Spider-Man 4, and at this point, the possibilities are endless. Pascal seems excited about charting a new path forward for the superhero, and based on the fan reactions to No Way Home, audiences are just as excited to see it come to fruition.
