The second trailer to Spider-Man: No Way Home reveals the various multiverse villains appearing in the MCU film, and the 4K version reveals how the MCU is fixing Electro's design. No Way Home will do the unprecedented and combine characters from all three Spider-Man film franchises, providing Tom Holland’s Peter Parker with his greatest challenge since fighting Thanos. These characters include at least five villains from other realities, and many expect to see the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield iterations of Spider-Man also show up. For some of the confirmed characters, like Electro, the MCU is giving them new designs that improve on their original movie looks.

Jamie Foxx's Max Dillon was the most prominent villain in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Initially, an ignored and tragically underappreciated electrician at Oscorp, Dillon received fantastic superpowers by accident, not unlike Spider-Man himself. Dillon initially idolized Spider-Man but became a villain when he felt betrayed by the webslinger. Calling himself Electro, Dillon allied himself with Harry Osborn. Jaime Foxx’s version of Electro visually resembles the Ultimate version in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, with his entire body having a luminescent blue appearance. Moreover, Dillon wore a containment suit upon allying himself with Harry Osborn, and the suit transformed into electricity along with Electro in certain scenes, making it most likely an advanced Oscorp invention. While based on the Ultimate comic book run, plenty of viewers questioned his appearance, feeling it looked somewhat silly.

However, as shown in the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer, Electro sports a new look more closely resembling his classic counterpart. Thanks to the trailer’s 4K definition, Dillon’s improved appearance can be seen in full detail. Max Dillon now wears a green electrician’s outfit, and his electrical surges are yellow instead of blue. When Dillon’s lightning forms around him, the bolts resemble the yellow designs on Electro’s 1960s costume. Although Max Dillon doesn’t wear a mask in either appearance, his electricity forms a five-pointed design around his face in a clever homage to his classic outfit. Electro’s iconic outfit wouldn’t be difficult to explain in either film franchise, given that Dillon was a superhero fanatic who accidentally received superpowers, but Spider-Man: No Way Home’s decision to blend his lightning with an ordinary outfit is a creative way of giving him his original Electro costume in a way that appears natural and without having him make it.

Electro hovers in the air and crackles with yellow energy in Spider-Man No Way Home.

Some viewers may wonder how the color of Electro’s electricity changed between The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man: No Way Home (and how he now has a more human appearance), but there’s a rather simple explanation for it. Dillon’s powers gradually evolved throughout the 2014 movie, with him initially struggling to control his power surges but eventually learning how to turn into energy and travel through power lines. By his final confrontation with Spider-Man, Dillon was also seen briefly changing his electricity color to purple and red. With this in mind, perhaps Dillon continued to evolve, now consciously choosing his lightning’s appearance and taking the form of a normal human. Of course, another explanation is that he's a multiverse version of Electro, one who still fights Spider-Man, but in a slightly different universe.

Jamie Foxx's appearance and powers as Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 were a faithful recreation of his Ultimate Spider-Man appearance, but it contrasted with his origin. Dillon was a hired enforcer in the Ultimate comics, serving criminals like Kingpin and supervillains like Norman Osborn. Jaime Foxx’s sympathetic version is far closer to the original Electro, who was an ordinary person who turned to crime upon gaining his electrical abilities. This makes his new appearance far more fitting. Moreover, the 4K trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home shows the movie will allow Foxx to better express the humanity of Max Dillon with his more human appearance.
