The first official trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home teases Electro’s welcomed design change, but they would do well not to change Sam Raimi’s Green Goblin. After months of anticipation, Sony finally dropped the first look at Tom Holland’s third Spider-Man film and it did not disappoint. In fact, the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer demolished Avengers: Endgame’s record for most trailer views in a 24-hour period. It surpassed Endgame’s 289 million views with a total of 355.5 million. It’s clear this Spider-Man film is one of the most highly anticipated superhero films of our time and for good reason.

No Way Home is finally kicking open the door to the multiverse in the MCU and doing it in spectacular fashion. The film seems to pick up moments after Spider-Man: Far From Home’s post-credits scene with the world learning Peter Parker is Spider-Man. Unable to handle this newfound drama, Peter enlists Doctor Strange’s help to set things right. Unfortunately, Strange’s tampering with the fabric of reality throws him and Peter into the multiverse. Ultimately, Peter will be forced to confront villains from across Sony’s past Spider-Man films, including Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus, Jamie Foxx’s Electro, and Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin.

Audiences are raving about the return of Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock and looking forward to Foxx’s second chance at Electro. However, they can’t help but notice some things have changed, and it’s not Doc Ock. Though the trailer did not reveal Electro’s full redesign, they made it clear this would not be the same Electro as seen in Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. This shouldn't come as a major surprise given the fact his character received its fair share of criticism after the release of the film. While the filmmakers are right to change Electro, Raimi’s returning Green Goblin should remain untouched.

Doc Ock appears in Spider-Man: No Way Home

The most obvious change to Electro’s overall design will likely be the character’s color scheme. In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Foxx’s Electro maintained a blue color palette from his skin tone to his powerful bolts of electricity. This design was heavily inspired by Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man Universe instead of Electro’s classic green and yellow look. Consequently, the yellow bolts of electricity chasing Spider-Man in the No Way Home trailer may tease a more classic interpretation of the character. Fortunately, Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock appears relatively unchanged since he battled Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man in Spider-Man 2.

While Doc Ock’s costume seems to have undergone minor changes, it maintains the character’s original look. From his metal tentacles to his black turtleneck, Molina’s nefarious villain appears to have just emerged from Raimi’s Spider-Man sequel film. It’s exactly what fans have hoped for. Hopefully, this sort of dedication to detail is given to Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin. Though different from the comics, Raimi’s Green Goblin design worked in the film and made for a truly terrifying villain. There’s no reason to change something that works, especially when it has become part of the nostalgia of Raimi’s Spider-Man films.

After all, nostalgia is going to be a crucial factor in the success of No Way Home. Audiences are going to flock to the theater to see what they hope is a live adaptation of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Audiences want to see the characters they remember from Sony's past Spider-Man films, not just variations on the original. Electro’s changes are only right because the original didn’t live up to expectations. This is not the case with Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin. Therefore, Spider-Man: No Way Home should maintain the look of Sam Raimi’s Green Goblin just as they have with Doc Ock.
