The Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer reveals how one of Doctor Octopus' tentacles gets an upgrade. The second trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home finally outlines the film's basic plot; Doctor Strange's misfiring magic spell causes some sort of rupture in the fabric of the multiverse, and classic Spider-Man villains from other universes are transported to the MCU's Earth. Their presence in this dimension apparently risks causing a multiversal collapse, meaning the heroes have no choice but to capture them and send them back. They're just one catch; according to Doctor Strange, all these characters are destined to die battling Spider-Man on their own Earths. That means Peter Parker will be responsible for their deaths, because he was the one who sent them to their fates.

The trailers have focused on one villain in particular; Alfred Molina's Doctor Octopus. A scientific genius, he seems to be the one who figures out Spider-Man is chasing ghosts - men destined for death, whose fates have already been sealed. Some shots in the trailer seem to hint Doctor Octopus will help Spider-Man - it's difficult to spot, but one seems to show Doctor Octopus evading an Electro-blast rather than Spider-Man, while he's apparently absent from the third-act battle between the heroes and the villains. What's more, the trailers confirm long-standing rumors Doctor Octopus will get some sort of upgrade, with at least one of his tentacles appearing to possess Iron Man technology. Naturally, there's been intense speculation over just where this came from.

The Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer actually reveals the origin of Doctor Octopus' upgrade. It confirms Doctor Octopus initially assumes this is his version of Spider-Man - for understandable reasons - and successfully pins the wall-crawler down. Doctor Octopus' tentacles are sophisticated technology in their own right, and consequently, they interact with the nanobots in Spider-Man's Iron Spider costume, drawing them from him; that's why Spider-Man's Iron Spider costume begins to disappear, and he's swiftly unmasked, leaving Doctor Octopus surprised because as far as he's concerned this isn't Peter Parker. Attentive viewers will note the tentacle pinning Spider-Man begins to change as it absorbs the nanobots.

It's interesting to note Spider-Man appears to be wearing a suit and tie underneath the Iron Spider armor, perhaps suggesting Doctor Octopus struck while he was either going from, or coming to, a court date. It's possible Doctor Octopus deliberately attacked at an inconvenient moment, but unlikely because if he'd been in the MCU for any length of time he'd have seen this version of Peter Parker's face on the news. It's more likely the multiversal collapse is centered on Spider-Man, and Doctor Octopus is dumped in his proximity at an inconvenient moment.

Doctor Octopus, meanwhile, is likely to get a substantial power-up from the Iron Spider's nanotechnology. His tentacles possess an artificial intelligence of their own, and presumably they tap into the Iron Spider's computers; it's even possible he'll gain Spider-Man's own AI, Karen, to help him figure out what's going on. Ironically, when Sam Raimi initially began working on Spider-Man 2 he originally planned to have Doctor Octopus be using tech from Stark Industries during his experiments - and it seems now Alfred Molina's Otto Octavius will come into contact with Stark tech in Spider-Man: No Way Home after all.
