Spider-Man: No Way Home is projected to have the biggest box office opening of any Spider-Man movie. While there's still a ways to go before the box office gets back to 2019 levels, this year has been encouraging for theaters as they look to get back on track amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. A number of highly anticipated titles, including F9, No Time to Die, Shang-Chi and others have posted healthy figures considering the circumstances. Even movies that had hybrid releases, such as Black Widow and Godzilla vs. Kong, scored pandemic-era record debuts when they opened.

During the holiday season, Spider-Man: No Way Home is another movie looking to give the box office a substantial boost. Building off Spider-Man: Far From Home's twist ending, No Way Home has generated widespread enthusiasm due to its multiverse storyline that integrates characters from previous Spider-Man film series. No Way Home advanced ticket sales are the highest since Avengers: Endgame in 2019, illustrating how excited audiences are to see it. Some of the earliest box office projections indicated No Way Home would have the year's highest opening, but the latest point to something even larger.

According to Box Office ProSpider-Man: No Way Home is estimated to earn between $190-250 million domestically in its opening weekend. Even the low end of those projections would be the highest debut ever for a Spider-Man movie, easily topping Spider-Man 3's $151.1 million from 2007. As a comparison, Spider-Man: Homecoming opened to $117 million, and Spider-Man: Far From Home grossed $92.5 million in its opening weekend.

Doc Ock Captures Spider-Man in No Way Home

Since the start of the pandemic, no movie has grossed $100 million domestically in its opening weekend. The closest was October's Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which earned $90 million in its first three days. So if Spider-Man: No Way Home hits anywhere within this range, it will be an impressive feat. Though viewers have demonstrated a willingness to go back to the theater for blockbuster tentpoles, there are still some viewers who don't feel completely safe returning to the multiplex. Based on the early ticket sales, it would appear No Way Home is the exception there, and moviegoers could show up in full force. The pandemic and new COVID variants make projecting the box office challenging, but there's a definite excitement for No Way Home.

Arguably, No Way Home is the biggest "event" style tentpole since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Spider-Man is one of the most popular Marvel characters, and Tom Holland's iteration has proven to be a fan-favorite over the past handful of years. Additionally, No Way Home has an ambitious narrative, bringing back familiar faces like Alfred Molina's Doc Ock, Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin, and Jamie Foxx's Electro (plus, never-ending rumors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will be back as their versions of Peter Parker). All of those factors make No Way Home a must-see film, and it's only playing in theaters. For viewers who don't want to miss out, they have no choice but to buy a ticket.
