Spider-Man: No Way Home is on its way to making it into the top 10 domestic box office grosses of all time by the end of the weekend. Throughout the pandemic era of the box office, which has seen even some "sure thing" properties suffering from depressed box office, Marvel films have been one of the sole shining lights of profitability. All four films from Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe - which also includes Black WidowEternals, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings - have made it into the top 6 films of 2021 domestically.

However, even though it came out on December 17 with just a few weeks left in the year, Spider-Man: No Way Home has outpaced the competition to a record-shattering degree. In fact, it became the first film in the pandemic era to pass the $1 billion mark worldwide. This is likely due to the wildly ambitious crossover plotline of the film, which sees Peter Parker (Tom Holland) approaching Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to cast a spell making it so that everyone forgets his secret identity. The spell goes haywire, pulling in people from every universe who know Peter Parker is Spider-Man, including the villains Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), and Sandman (Thomas Haden Church) from Tobey Maguire's 2002 Spider-Man trilogy, and Lizard (Rhys Ifans) and Electro (Jamie Foxx) from Andrew Garfield's 2012 The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel.

Per DeadlineSpider-Man: No Way Home is projected to reach a domestic total gross of $605.1 million by the end of New Year's weekend. If this pans out, this will make No Way Home the #10 domestic film of all time, supplanting Pixar's lucrative 2018 sequel Incredibles 2. The only other Marvel movies that currently occupy the top 10 are Avengers team-up films, with 2012's The Avengers at #8, 2018's Avengers: Infinity War at #5, and 2019's Avengers: Endgame - the only Marvel film that No Way Home has been consistently trailing behind in its box office projections - at #2.

Spider-Man, Mary Jane and Doctor Strange from Spider-Man: No Way Home

No Way Home has shot way past all other live-action Spider-Man films, with the second-place contender being 2002's original Spider-Man, which holds a place at #36 domestically. Indeed, although both films were box office successes, No Way Home has already made more in the U.S. than both Amazing Spider-Man films made during their entire runs combined. If it takes in just $119 million more, it will do the same thing with the domestic gross of both previous Tom Holland films combined.

As Spider-Man: No Way Home continues to shatter records, fans are waiting with bated breath to see how much longer it can keep up its miraculous box office run. It continues to look unlikely that the film will outpace Avengers: Endgame. However, considering the fact that the film still hasn't opened in China (it is still awaiting approval by the censorship board), that territory may offer a welcome boost to its worldwide gross as it continues to dominate the box office and help propel it to new dizzying heights.
