Benedict Cumberbatch reacts to Spider-Man: No Way Home's immense success and its post-credits scene. It seems 2021 was saving its biggest cinematic spectacle for the final weeks of the year. Marvel and Sony's Spider-Man: No Way Home arrived in mid-December after months of anticipation; it received glowing reviews from fans and critics, and swiftly became the biggest box office success of the pandemic era. With $673.5 million domestically and counting, No Way Home is well on its way to becoming one of the highest-grossing films of all time.

Though most of the action is, naturally, focused on Tom Holland's Peter Parker, Cumberbatch also has a vital role in Spider-Man: No Way Home. He returns to play Doctor Strange for the fifth time and serves as the voice of reason in Peter's multiverse-breaking actions. No Way Home is guaranteed to connect to Cumberbatch's next MCU outing, May's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. As the title suggests, the upcoming film ties in well to the concept of the multiverse. Plus, the first teaser trailer for Doctor Strange 2 was the second post-credits scene in No Way Home.

Cumberbatch is enjoying a fair amount of success right now, as he's also courting awards attention for his role in The Power of the Dog. He recently reflected on how things have been going in an interview with Deadline, where he shared his thoughts on the reception to Spider-Man: No Way Home. That included fans' reactions to the Doctor Strange 2 trailer, which meant a lot to the actor. Cumberbatch said:

“I’m thrilled at the reaction to the teaser trailer at the end of Spider-Man; I’m thrilled at the reaction that film’s been having. I mean, it’s been a bit of a moment, to be honest.”

"A bit of a moment" might be an understatement when considering the sheer size of Spider-Man: No Way Home's success. Add in Cumberbatch's many nominations for The Power of the Dog, and the onetime Sherlock star is in a very good place. Marvel fans are still processing all the surprises of Spider-Man: No Way Home, but some are already looking ahead to Doctor Strange 2. With its own multiverse premise, it has the potential to be just as shocking as the Spider-Man movie.

Reshoots on Doctor Strange 2 only just came to an end recently, finally concluding what appears to be a jam-packed shoot. Cumberbatch has spoken about the ambitiousness of Multiverse of Madness' story and even indicated he's a bit wary of it. Because of that, the positive reactions to the Doctor Strange 2 trailer must be a bit of a confidence booster. After being treated to 2+ hours of multiverse shenanigans, fans got a taste of the darker side of that thorny concept with the Spider-Man: No Way Home credits scene, and they're pretty excited to see more. This is a bit of a moment for Cumberbatch, and it is far from over yet.
