The trailers for Spider-Man: No Way Home went to great lengths to keep the movie’s biggest appearances a secret, but they didn’t pay much attention to other details, as they actually spoiled its huge death scene. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is moving away from Thanos and the Infinity Stones now that the Infinity Saga is over, and the main concept to explore in this new era of movies and TV shows is the multiverse. Although Loki already gave viewers a glimpse at the multiverse, this was explored a bit deeper in Spider-Man: No Way Home, bringing major and heartbreaking consequences to Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) life.

Following the reveal of his identity by Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) and being framed for this villain’s death at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, Spider-Man: No Way Home saw Peter Parker dealing with the consequences of his biggest secret being exposed. In an effort to keep those he loves safe, Peter asked Doctor Strange for help and so the Sorcerer agreed to cast a spell that would make everyone forget Peter is Spider-Man. Unfortunately, as Peter kept changing the spell, the gates of the multiverse were opened, allowing villains from past Spider-Man movies (Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Lizard, Electro, and Sandman) and the two other Spider-Men (Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield) to cross over to the MCU.

Peter counted on the help of Ned (Jacob Batalon) and MJ (Zendaya) during this multiversal mess, and he also had Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) on his side, and she even helped him take the villains to a safer place after getting rid of Doctor Strange as he and Peter had opposing ideas on how to deal with them. Peter chose to “cure” these villains, but the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe) turned out to be the most difficult one to deal with, creating a lot of destruction and leading to Aunt May’s death – and even though it was a very heartbreaking scene (with Aunt May even delivering Uncle Ben’s famous quote about power and responsibility), it wasn’t surprising as the trailers spoiled it.

Marisa Tomei as Aunt May in Spider Man

Although Aunt May doesn’t feature prominently in the trailers for Spider-Man: No Way Home, her brief appearances were enough to hint at her demise all thanks to the visual (and sound) language of the trailers. In the first teaser, Aunt May is shown in the interrogation scene and the camera lingers on her a bit and fades to black, with the sound enhancing this very moment. In the full trailer, there’s a scene of Peter trying to intercept the Green Goblin’s bomb that contributed to May’s death and later on May is seen running through that same building, right after Spider-Man tells Strange that there has to be another way but the Sorcerer replies with “there isn’t”. Of course, there are many other things that were spoiled in the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailers, such as Doctor Octopus becoming an ally (as he isn’t shown fighting Spider-Man alongside the rest) and even the appearance of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, as fans were quick to point out the exact scenes where they were digitally removed.

Aunt May’s demise was also theorized by fans months before the Spider-Man: No Way Home teaser came out, which only made her death less surprising, though that doesn’t mean that it wasn’t heartbreaking, especially as Peter is now completely alone as no one remembers who he is. It’s not the first time Marvel spoils a huge character moment in its trailers and it surely won’t be the last time, but it’s curious how the studio went to lengths to keep some things a secret and didn’t care much about other equally important moments.
