Andrew Garfield Reveals The Scene That Made Him Return For No Way Home

Andrew Garfield opens up about the scene in Spider-Man: No Way Home that convinced him to return. It's been a month since the Jon Watts and Tom Holland film hit theaters, breaking box office records, and most importantly, delivering on its promise of a satisfying story. A big part of why it's become a fan-favorite is because of Garfield and Tobey Maguire's appearance in the movie as their respective versions of the wall-crawler.

Rumors that both actors were set to be in Spider-Man: No Way Home started before the film even got a proper title in early 2021. While Maguire was able to dodge questions about the particular speculation, Garfield had been haunted by queries from the press as he promoted his other projects, such as The Eyes of Tammy Faye and Tick, Tick... Boom!. He continued to deny it until the film itself confirmed that he was indeed in the threequel. Now that his involvement in the project is out in the open, he's more than eager to talk about the experience of reprising his role as Spider-Man in the MCU.

During his recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via ComicBook.com), Garfield revealed how the initial talks about joining Spider-Man: No Way Home panned out. He was pitched the movie's story but without the script yet. Eventually, he received portions of it, and the scene where his Peter Parker saved MJ (Zendaya) from falling stood out to him as it reminded him of his character's failure to save Gwen (Emma Stone) in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. After that, he was immediately sold on the project, saying that there was no way he wasn't going to do the film when it included that profound moment. Read Garfield's quote below:

"I went to their offices, and they basically said, well this is what we want to do. We think it can really work. We don't have a script yet. We don't want it to be like a stunt thing. We don't want it to be like a kind of a cameo, like a quick in and out. We want it to be actually in service to Tom's journey as Peter and in service to both of your different Peters and we really think there's something really interesting to explore about when these three lone wolves who think they're alone in the universe in their own singular experience of being Spider-Man come together, what we think, and we want to collaborate on it, basically. We want to have your input and your ideas and Amy was really amazing with that because she knows that I come with a lot of thoughts and creativity and imagination and she was very good at setting that up with those guys. And they were they were just like, 'Yes, this is the way we want to work. We want it to be a collaboration.'"

"The main image that they pitched me was catching Zendaya, catching MJ. That was the first pages I saw and I was kind of like, 'There's no way of not doing this,' because that's profound. That's a profound moment like an older brother saving his little brother from his same fate across the universe. If that portal hadn't been opened up. and my Peter Parker hadn't been there at that moment, it's arguable that he would have had the same fate. You suddenly get into this incredible cosmic, meant-to-be destined moment where I get to heal the worst trauma in my life while simultaneously saving my little brother from having to experience that same trauma. Suddenly you're in very mythic territory, and it's just profoundly beautiful."

MJ's falling scene during Spider-Man: No Way Home's third act was prominently used in the film's marketing, and fans were quick to point out how similar it was to Gwen's tragic death in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. At this point, rumors about Garfield being in the film continued to persist thanks to numerous Spider-Man: No Way Home leaks, so many theorized that in this particular scene, Garfield's Peter Parker would be the one to save her despite Holland's wall-crawler's attempt to reach his girlfriend. This prediction panned out to be true, but it didn't diminish the emotional impact of seeing it actually play on the big screen, especially with Garfield's brilliant performance.

This moment in Spider-Man: No Way Home benefits both Holland and Garfield's versions of Spider-Man. Obviously, the fact that MJ is still alive means that she could continue factoring in the MCU moving forward, despite the fact that she doesn't have any recollection of her time with Peter because of Doctor Strange's (Benedict Cumberbatch) final spell. Meanwhile, Garfield's web-slinger was given the chance to make up for his catastrophic mistake that led to Gwen's death. Saving MJ helps him to finally forgive himself and move forward from the tragedy. This makes the potential The Amazing Spider-Man 3 more interesting, in case Sony officially greenlights it.
