Spider-Man: No Way Home star Andrew Garfield has revealed the only people he felt guilty lying to about his appearance in the film. 2021's No Way Home has quickly gone down in history as one of the most successful films of all time. Since its release it has broken numerous box office records, including surpassing James Cameron's Avatar on the domestic charts. This cultural phenomenon marks the third installment of the MCU's stand-alone Spider-Man films, and follows the titular web-slinger (Tom Holland) as he contends with characters from previous Spider-Man universes after one of Doctor Strange's (Benedict Cumberbatch) spells goes wrong. Among the appearing Multiverse characters were the two previous live-action iterations of Spider-Man, Garfield (who starred in The Amazing Spider-Man series) and Tobey Maguire (who starred in Sam Raimi's popular trilogy).

Early on, it was revealed that several villains would be appearing from the Multiverse in No Way Home, including Alfred Molina's Doc Ock, and Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin. However, the appearance of Maguire and Garfield's Spider-Men was kept heavily under wraps. Of course, as soon as viewers discovered that No Way Home would include characters from previous Spider-Man series, they immediately wanted to know if either Garfield or Maguire would be appearing. In what may seem like the cinematic deception of the decade so far, both Garfield and Maguire spent nearly six months insisting that they had no involvement in No Way Home. Since the film was released and his involvement was revealed, Garfield has stated that he didn't mind lying as he knew that the payoff for fans would be immense.

However, in a recent interview with THR to discuss his Oscar-nominated role in Tick, Tick...Boom!, Garfield has revealed the only people he felt guilty lying to about No Way Home. According to Garfield, all of his high school friends were "super excited" for No Way Home, and despite being close with them, Garfield did not reveal a thing. Garfield has stated that after his friends saw the film, they asked him"how could you not tell us?" After receiving this reaction, Garfield has admitted that they were the only people he "felt really bad not telling." See his full quote below:

"It was my high school friends, because they were all super excited. And I'm seeing them tomorrow night for dinner. We haven't seen each other for a while 'cause of the pandemic. But, um, you know...they were all like 'you're not gonna tell us? How could you not tell us?' And I really felt - they were the only people I felt really bad not telling."

Garfield did also admit that he had not seen his high school friends for quite some time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the very least, this can give him an excuse as to why he never brought it up to them. It may have also given him a clever cover for why he was unavailable during the time he would have been busy shooting his secret appearance in No Way HomeHowever, Garfield's deception of his high school friends seems to have been at least somewhat forgiven, as he has stated that he will be getting together with them soon. Perhaps this will give him the chance to mend some bridges.

Despite this, Garfield maintains that he did not have trouble lying about his appearance, as it served No Way Home's great reveal. He certainly seems to have been right. The reveal of Garfield and Maguire stands as a highlight of No Way Home for many fans, and it is very possible that the moment would not have landed quite as well if everyone knew it was coming. Garfield may feel guilty about lying to his high school friends about Spider-Man: No Way Home, but hopefully he can rest easy knowing it was for a greater cause.
