The Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer already spoiled the twist in MJ's (Zendaya) scene falling off the scaffolding. Marvel Studios and Sony released the much-anticipated Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer, revealing more from the upcoming Jon Watts-directed film. While the clip had a lot of highlights, one of its most talked-about moments is the shot of MJ falling from the top of the scaffolding surrounding the Statue of Liberty being renovated, while Tom Holland's Peter Parker tries to save her. But it may not be as straightforward as that, with the marketing footage potentially edited to be deliberately misleading.

The Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer has already been accused of rampant trickery: in fact, the Brazilian No Way Home teaser seemed to reveal that Marvel was hiding the multiverse Spider-Men, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire. Another couple of shots seemingly included two appearances by Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man, thanks to an apparent editing oversight. Something, it seems, could be afoot. Naturally, there is some suggestion that No Way Home's teasers are no more misleading than all movie marketing now: in the age of leaks and spoilers, preserving the magic of surprise can mean outright lying in the pre-release hype-building stage. That would explain why it appears Tom Holland's version of Spider-Man dives after MJ as she falls, despite the offending shot that otherwise seems to point to Garfield's key involvement.

That shot comes toward the end of the new Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer, when Peter fights a group of villains in a construction site. When MJ falls, the wide shot cuts in to a close-up shot of their hands almost touching. Obviously, the assumption is that it's Holland's hand reaching out for MJ, but there are also those who claim that this could be Andrew Garfield's iteration of Spider-Man. Admittedly, this might sound farfetched since The Amazing Spider-Man actor isn't in the trailer, and it isn't even certain he's in this movie at all, but there are a couple of factors that support this theory. For starters, the hand reaching out for MJ's doesn't seem to be Holland's. The design of the glove shows it to be the same as Garfield's with its blue palm and red fingers. Meanwhile, Holland's gloves either black with red fingers, or fully red.

Spider-Man Gloves Garfield Holland

Narratively speaking, it would make sense for Garfield to save MJ - or to at least help - given that No Way Home is confirmed to explore the idea of fate and fixed points (including each of the villains being killed by Spider-Man). And the fact that Garfield's Spider-Man suit prominently features blue palms, rather than the solid design of the MCU Spider-Man, the possible evidence would seem to be there to back up the symbolic resonance. Of course, it's possible Peter has changed costume, since No Way Home will see multiple Spider-Man costumes, or the lighting in the trailer has been purposefully manipulated to make the suit appear more blue, but it would have to be a mistake. The integrated No Way Home Spider-Man suit, which he appears to be wearing in the battle in the trailers has dark (and not even blue) fingertips. So that doesn't quite fit.

Further backing up this theory is the idea that Garfield and Maguire's versions of Spider-Man are actually involved in the third-act fight of the film that was prominently featured in the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer. In the Brazilian teaser for the blockbuster, Lizard (Rhys Ifans) appears to be hit by an unseen opponent mid-air, suggesting that certain elements in the scene were strategically edited out. Granted that Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) could be the one fighting the villain, but there's really no reason for him to be edited out since his involvement in the threequel has long been confirmed. It's now not long until Spider-Man: No Way Home hits theaters, so audiences won't have to wait that long to learn the secrets of the movie. That includes whether or not it's actually Garfield's Spider-Man who saves MJ - if she's saved at all - and not Holland's version.
