Andrew Garfield admits he lied to Emma Stone about his Spider-Man: No Way Home role and reveals her reaction to seeing him in the movie. Garfield was the second major star to carry a webslinging franchise in Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man movies following the departures of Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire from their original Spider-Man series. Stone starred in Garfield's movies as his love interest and classmate Gwen Stacy, though would meet her demise in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Though Marc Webb's Amazing Spider-Man movies received largely divided reviews from critics and audiences alike, both Garfield and Stone received critical acclaim for their performances in their respective roles, namely for their chemistry and for the former's better infusion of witty humor as the webslinger. Due to the film's critical and financial underperformances, Sony would partner with Marvel Studios to once again reboot the character with Tom Holland starring as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Following two solo films and multiple Avengers appearances, Holland would return for his third outing Spider-Man: No Way Home alongside both Garfield and Maguire in a multiversal adventure, though some were left truly surprised by one's appearance.

While appearing in a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Andrew Garfield admitted he lied to former co-star Emma Stone about his Spider-Man: No Way Home role. The actor recalled Stone frequently texting him to ask if he was in the movie, to which he denied every time, only for her to find out the truth upon seeing the film. See what Garfield shared below:

"Emma kept on texting me and was like, 'Are you in this new Spider-Man film?' and I was like, 'I don't know what you're talking about.' [Laughs] She was like, 'Shut up, just tell me.' I was like, 'I honestly don't know,' I couldn't even tell her, it was hilarious. And then she saw it and was like, 'You're a jerk.' [Laughs] I didn't want to tell anyone, I took it super seriously, I told no one."

In the lead up to Spider-Man: No Way Home's release, Garfield may have been the most careful performer Marvel has ever seen with their secrets. Despite being poked and prodded by every interviewer possible, the Oscar nominee kept up the game of keeping the truth hidden, with Garfield even admitting he enjoyed lying about his appearance in the film through these various interviews. Some fans are even calling for the star to win an Oscar for his ability to convince everyone of his not appearing in the movie, which ironically comes as he's considered a favorite to bring the statue home for his recent turn in Tick, Tick...Boom!.

Garfield's efforts to keep his Spider-Man: No Way Home role a secret more or less paid off, despite a number of leaked material in the lead up to the release all but confirming his and Maguire's appearances in the film. Audiences ultimately didn't care or successfully avoided these leaks as the film has become a smash hit for Sony and Marvel, having grossed over $1.625 billion at the box office at the time of writing, making it the highest-grossing film of 2021 and eighth-highest of all time. Garfield's webslinger can be seen alongside Maguire and Holland's in Spider-Man: No Way Home in theaters now.
