The second Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer needs to show Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, otherwise, it risks being a massive disappointment. Marketing for the upcoming Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment film started fairly late. And with less than two months to go before the film hits theaters, Spider-Man: No Way Home's next trailer is slated to drop any time now. When that time comes, it's imperative that it finally confirms both Maguire and Garfield's multiversal involvement in the blockbuster.

Directed by Jon Watts, Spider-Man: No Way Home will wrap up Tom Holland's Spider-Man trilogy in the MCU. Its story picks up after the cliffhanger ending of Spider-Man: Far From Home where the wall-crawler's secret identity was revealed to the world. To make matters worse, he's also being framed for the death of Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal). The film seems to not be dwelling much on this predicament, however. Instead, Holland's Peter Parker is set to face a much bigger problem with Earth being exposed to multiversal threats following Doctor Strange's (Benedict Cumberbatch) tampered spell. This could ultimately lead to the fruition of persistent rumors that Maguire and Garfield's Spider-Men will be suiting up and appearing in the threequel.

There is no concrete indication that there's truth to these speculations, but between mounting evidence and the film's actual premise, there's a very good chance that the aforementioned rumor is true. Assuming that this is the case, Spider-Man: No Way Home's second trailer must officially confirm this by showing both actors. Doing that would make it easier to market the movie — not that it needs any more hyping up. But it allows Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment to capitalize on people's excitement over previous Spider-Men's involvement in the flick. In any case, there's really no point in continuously denying their participation since fans have been invested in the idea now for quite a while. The public has been engrossed with this specific aspect of Spider-Man: No Way Home's story that there's even barely any discussion about the journey of Holland's Peter Parker in the movie.

Once Maguire and Garfield's appearance is confirmed, the general conversation about the blockbuster could finally move on from guessing if they're actually showing up to other more interesting storytelling elements. That includes how they fit in the story, which is a far more important question to ask. Spider-Man: No Way Home is already packed as it is. Aside from catering to the narrative that Spider-Man: Far From Home set-up, it also needs to properly deal with the multiversal ramifications of Doctor Strange's mistake. Couple that with the idea that Holland's Peter could be fighting a variation of the Sinister Six teased in The Amazing Spider-Man 2's ending, and there may not be that much time to spend with Garfield and Maguire. In any case, confirming their appearance through marketing effectively relieves Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment of the pressure from people's expectations. It gives a sense of what roles they will play in the film and how involved they would be in the story.

At this point, Spider-Man: No Way Home's second trailer is arriving sooner rather than later. Considering people's anticipation for the threequel, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment could actually get away with not putting much effort into its marketing without the risk of it flopping. But, it's important that they manage people's expectations for the film, and the longer they hide Maguire and Garfield, the higher the chance that the movie itself disappoints a lot of fans.
