Spider-Man fans may think they know the history of the symbiote suit, but Marvel's newest comic is changing everything. Starting with the first villain who knew the Symbiote Spider-Man's costume was more than it appeared...
The series was originally pitched as a chance to return fans to one of the most famous eras of Spider-Man comics, when Peter Parker returned from the Secret Wars event with a fancy new suit that responded to his thought. Peter was a long time away from realizing his 'suit' was an alien symbiote, which would eventually merge with Eddie Brock and take their hatred of Spider-Man. But before then, Spidey and the Symbiote Suit had another challenge on their hands: Mysterio.
The supervillain will soon be brought to life in Spider-Man: Far From Home, where his supervillain nature may be changed. The first issue of Symbiote Spider-Man took a similar page, suggesting that Mysterio--well, Quentin Beck had decided his hunger for villainy was all just a fantasy. And just as he was hanging up his magic globe and uniform for good, Spider-Man struck to give him something to hate.
But the bigger mistake Peter Parker made that night was letting Quentin witness his strange suit transform into street clothes. For a fan of magic, misidrection, and mysticism, that kind of trick is irresistible. And the preview for Symbiote Spider-Man #2 confirms Mysterio is on the hunt. Take a look:
The covers of the Symbiote Spider-Man series suggested Mysterio would play a major role, if not the main antagonist in this previously-untold story. But now fans can appreciate how Peter Parker unwittingly made himself the subject of Mysterio's obsession. Recent writers have shown a similar naivete as a trademark of Spider-Man's, including the revelation (years later) that the symbiote was never the villain, Spider-Man was. At least where there infamous origin story is concerned. The symbiote was, like Mysterio, aiming to do the right thing... which is when Peter Parker stormed in to 'save the day' and ended up making things worse.
So who is this mysterious "new potential ally" Mysterio is seeking out to help him in his crusade? Check it out below in the preview pages of Symbiote Spider-Man #2, as the ally in question may or may not be seen breaking Tom Cruise's nose:
