Tom Holland wants to see a more diverse Spider-Man universe. Spider-Man: No Way Home, the highly anticipated third chapter in the MCU Spider-Man trilogy is close to release with anticipation for the film high as numerous ticket sites crashed the day tickets became available to the public. While Amy Pascal has hinted at a whole new Spider-Man trilogy featuring Tom Holland, no official announcement has been made by Marvel Studios.

Meanwhile, Sony Pictures has been developing their own separate universe of films based on Spider-Man characters. Venom and its sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage have been box office hits, with Morbius set to open in January 2022. Kraven the Hunter starring Aaron Taylor Johnson is set for release in January 2023 and the studio is developing a Madame Webb film. Sony Animation has split Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse into two parts, which will be released in 2022 and 2023 respectively. Sony Pictures has a lot invested in the Spider-Man character and his universe of supporting players.

In a recent red carpet interview promoting Spider-Man: No Way Home in London, Holland spoke to AP Entertainment about what he wants to see for the future of the Spider-Man universe. Holland hopes to see a more diverse roster of characters in the Spider-Man universe. The actor has enjoyed playing Spider-Man but would be willing to step down if that is the best direction for the character. Holland said:

"I love this character more than anything. This character has changed my life. I have a relationship with my fans that is so wonderful and I couldn't ask for it to be any better. But I want to do what's best for the character and if it is time for me to step down, and the next person to step up I'll do so proudly. You know I'd love to see a more diverse Spider-Man universe and that would be really exciting."

Tom Holland as Spider-Man and Spider-Verse Miles Morales

Holland has hinted at his time as Spider-Man coming to an end, saying if he is still Spider-Man after 30 he has done something wrong (Holland is currently 25). The actor will be the lead in Uncharted, another potential franchise for Sony Pictures, and the actor's schedule could start filling up in coming years with more high-profile projects. While Spider-Man is likely to return, there is a chance Peter Parker may take more of a backseat in favor of other web slingers from the pages of Marvel comics for either the MCU or to do battle with the various villains existing in the separate Sony universe.

If Holland and Peter Parker's story is coming to an end, there are numerous characters Marvel and Sony could use to fill in the role. Miles Morales is the most obvious, as the character is both the lead in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and the video game Spider-Man: Miles Morales and being referenced as existing in the MCU in Spider-Man: Homecoming.  There are also numerous characters who have taken on the Spider-Woman mantle like Jessica Drew or Julia Carpenter, or even Silk who technically appeared in the MCU as played by Tiffany Espensen. Spider-Gwen could be a potential lead, as a superpowered version of Gwen Stacey who works alongside Peter Parker would be a way to distinguish herself from both the character's traditional comic book origin but the version audiences saw in The Amazing Spider-Man films. All diverse characters with unique backgrounds and stories to tell to keep the Spider-Man universe thriving for years to come.
