During the September PlayStation 5 Showcase, Insomniac Games debuted a seven-minute gameplay demo for Spider-Man: Miles Morales Besides showing off Miles's combat abilities, the demo established some key plot points for the spin-off game, including when it would take place in the timeline established by Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be a smaller adventure compared to 2018's Marvel's Spider-Man. Developers have compared it to Uncharted: Lost Legacy in scope; if that size is accurate, the game could be about ten hours in length. The ending of Marvel's Spider-Man set the stage for Miles Morales to become a superhero alongside Peter Parker, and scenes in the DLC The City That Never Sleeps showed Peter mentoring Miles. Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be the first time players can control Miles as a full superhero.

According to Insomniac's post on the PlayStation BlogSpider-Man: Miles Morales will take place one year after the events of Marvel's Spider-Man, and it looks like a lot has changed in Mile's life. For one thing, Miles has revealed his secret identity to his best friend, Ganke Lee. For another, Miles's mother, Rio Morales is now running for City Council. It's possible this decision was spurred by the death of her husband during the events of Marvel's Spider-Man. Miles has relocated to Harlem since he was last seen, and that borough will be the setting for the game.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales Will Focus on Harlem and New Villains

Phin AKA The Tinkerer in Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales

The fact that Spider-Man: Miles Morales is largely set in Harlem should give players a sense of the expected size of the game, as Harlem was only one of nine districts that made up New York in Marvel's Spider-Man. This only confirms that the focus of Spider-Man: Miles Morales is much smaller than its predecessor. It also seems like Insomniac is trying to make this game as standalone as possible, with few returning faces from Marvel's Spider-Man currently revealed. Miles will be facing new enemies in the form of the energy company Roxxon and a group called the Underground led by the Tinkerer. There's no word yet as to whether Peter Parker will make an appearance at all, or if he will be conveniently out of town.

It would make sense for Peter Parker's Spider-Man to be largely absent from Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Peter casts a large shadow, and this is Miles's time to shine as his own Spider-Man. Insomniac did some interesting villain battles in Marvel's Spider-Man, so it would be fun to have Peter show up in the finale to have the two work together. Either way, if Marvel's Spider-Man does get a full-fledged sequel, it would be great to see Miles continue to be a playable character. Insomniac ended their article with a cryptic "We have big plans for the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe," so more games starring spider heroes seems a likely prospect for the future.
