The New Mutants director Josh Boone is interested in making a Spider-Man movie. After a long road to the big screen, The New Mutants finally looks poised to be released later this week, on August 28. The beleaguered film has been delayed numerous times, but Disney has held firm to the late August release date amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. It almost feels too good to be true, but as tickets went on sale last weekThe New Mutants is definitely about to arrive.

The New Mutants follows a group of troubled teens being held in a shady facility for psychiatric monitoring. However, when strange occurrences threaten their existence, the teens must use their growing abilities to fight for their survival. The New Mutants has drawn particular interest from fans because of its position as a horror thriller, which feels decidedly different from the X-Men movies that came before. For the most part, The New Mutants stands separate from previous X-Men films, though Boone has included a few outside references to ground it in the timeline.

Ahead of The New Mutants' release, Screen Rant sat down with Boone to discuss the film and superhero movies at large. At one point, Boone considered what kind of movie he would like to make for the MCU, and for what character. Boone's answer, quite honestly, makes perfect sense:

I don't know, man. I'd look at any opportunity that came my way. Our favorite character growing up, more than any other, was always Spider-Man. So , we'll be like everybody else, "We wish we could make a Spider-Man movie!"

Tom Holland Spider-Man Far From Home

Boone's work with the young protagonists of The New Mutants could make him the prime option for a Spider-Man movie, particularly if it focused on the teen years of his life. That's where the MCU so far has kept Peter Parker (Tom Holland), though all of his solo movies have so far been directed by Jon Watts. Watts is expected to return for the MCU's Spider-Man 3, which was recently rumored to have the title Homesick. That film is tentatively eyeing a production start this fall ahead of its December 2021 release.

For his part, Boone has been open about his desire to turn The New Mutants into a trilogy. That seemed more likely before The New Mutants was repeatedly delayed because of the Disney-Fox merger, and now Marvel seems more interested in rebooting the X-Men for the MCU. Therefore, it remains to be seen if Boone will get to make his New Mutants trilogy, though it seems unlikely at this current moment. Perhaps Marvel can bring him on for an MCU film in the future as a way to make it up to him. Clearly, he's interested in the possibility.
