Tom Holland proposes the idea of playing Spider-Man as a villain. Tom Holland has been playing Peter Parker across five, soon to be six, movies since he first appeared in Captain America: Civil War in 2016. His newest portrayal of the character in Spider-Man: No Way Home hits theaters on December 17 of this year. This movie picks up right after Far From Home, with Spider-Man’s identity just having been revealed to the public.

Tom Holland’s Marvel contract was said to be finishing with the completion of his sixth movie, although there is still a chance he would continue the role. While promoting this film with GQ last month, he mentioned that he thinks his time as Spider-Man might be coming to an end, stating “If I’m playing Spider-Man after I’m 30, I’ve done something wrong.” However, not long after this interview, Amy Pascal (one of the producers for Marvel’s Spider-Man movies) announced that there would be three more MCU Spider-Man projects that involve Tom Holland. He has since clarified that his continued involvement in the MCU is more of an “open conversation."

Recently, Tom Holland spoke to Fandom about his future as Spider-Man. Holland has had a positive experience playing the fan-favorite character, however, he’s not sure in what way he will be involved in the future of the character within the MCU. This falls in line with his statement about being finished with Peter Parker, although he does go on to talk about potential plots and characters that he’d like to see and do as Spider-Man- including possibly playing a villain:

“I also would like to maybe see what happens if my Spider-Man becomes a villain, I think there are some interesting things where you could make a film about an anti-hero, or things like that.”

Holland has also been very vocal about recasting Spider-Man. Holland believes bringing more diversity to the role may be what is best for the character, going on to speak about the potential of having Peter Parker be a mentor for a new Spider-Man/Woman in the future. Peter Parker may be the most famous Spider-Man out there, but he’s not the only one. As was recently confirmed within the MCU, there are multiple different versions of Spider-Man across different universes, opening the door for a new version of this beloved character.

Holland’s outspokenness about passing on the character to another could suggest that the actor was not aware that Sony planned for his continued involvement in the franchise. Although it could also have been a hint at the kind of plotlines being suggested for future movies. There are a plethora of non-hero Spider-Men throughout the history of the character, most notably Venom. The release of Venom: Let There Be Carnage gave fans a post-credit scene featuring Peter Parker, leading fans to expect he will appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home, although there has been no confirmation as of yet. This crossover, however small, makes the likelihood of a villainous Spider-Man within the MCU even more possible.
