Spider-Man became Earth's last hope when a new zombie virus infected several heroes in the Marvel Universe in Marvel Zombies: Resurrection. When the undead Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men are intent on consuming and devouring all they can find, Peter Parker will be the last holdout for good as one of the final few heroes alive to defend the innocent from those he once called friends and allies.

Marvel Zombies: Resurrection is a miniseries that features a new take on the concept previously introduced in the original Marvel Zombies event in 2005. Originally created by Mark Millar, Greg Land, and Robert Kirkman (of The Walking Dead fame), a mysterious virus emerged in the Marvel Universe, with the infection sparing no one. Naturally, those with powers end up eating consuming the most. What's interesting is that once having eaten, the heroes retain the same personalities and intelligence they had while living, rather than being the usual animalistic and dumb versions one would assume from typical zombie depictions. Some of the heroes end up feeling guilty after consuming, while others rationalize and embrace their new existence.

Phillip Kennedy Johnson will be taking the reins in the zombie-led genre, by creating an all-new story for Resurrection. Marvel Zombies: Resurrection #1 was published in October of 2019, beginning with a call for help in deep space. The Fantastic Four, Avengers, and X-Men travel to the dead corpse of none other than Galactus. It's there they learn that Galactus is essentially being piloted by a hive-mind of undead organisms that have already infected Captain Marvel, whose call for help was a successful trap to lure in others. While the hive-mind appears to have access to the memories of each individual it corrupts, it looks like it operates all members of its host as one, focused on feeding and infecting more to join the host. One by one, the heroes are infected, including the likes of Wolverine, Sue Storm, Captain America, Iron Man, Beast, and even Thor. However, this does not include Spider-Man, who did not join the expedition and remained on Earth.

Now, Marvel Zombies: Resurrection will continue with the second, third, and fourth issues this May. The first issue ended with Spider-Man on Earth, watching the dead corpse of Galactus falling from orbit, filled with his infected allies. If the solicitation for the miniseries is any indication, Spider-Man looks to be the main protagonist of the event, serving as Earth's primary source of defense as a result of every other big superhero serving as the threat.
