Avengers Infinity War Spider-Man Snap

Warning: Spoilers for Symbiote Spider-Man: Crossroads #2

Arguably the most heartbreaking line in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is uttered by Spider-Man in Avengers: Infinity War, as he crumbles into dust in Tony Stark's arms. That line just became comic book canon thanks to the pages of Symbiote Spider-Man: Crossroads #2 by writer Peter David, penciler Greg Land, and inker Jay Leisten. As Spider-Man is sinking into mud, he says "I don't wanna go.", which is very much a call back to his final moments after Thanos' snap.

In this comic book storyline, Spider-Man has been thrown through an interdimensional portal by Karnilla, Queen of the Norns, after his fight with Moondark. He ends up landing right into a fight with The Incredible Hulk in this new dimension that is similar, but also very different. After escaping a very angry Hulk, he ends up in a muddy river, which he tries to cross but cannot do. Eventually, the mud starts to consume him, and this is where he makes that famous line Marvel Comics canon.

What works so well about this line is that this time it is not heartbreaking, but silly and humorous. Spider-Man is literally fighting with the mud, and surrounding tree branches -- even getting smacked in the head by one. He even jokes with himself about if this is really how he is going to die. Not by Doc Ock or the Goblin, or Electro's hand, but by drowning in some mud. This is obviously a call back to a moment that had many fans in tears, as Peter fades away into obscurity, so turning into something everyone can laugh about now is extremely clever on Marvel's part. This moment is sure to put a lot of smiles on a lot of faces -- especially because he is very clearly fine, in the very next panel, when he is saved by Devil Dinosaur and Moon Boy.

spider-man line canon

This isn't the first time a line has been taken from the movies and thrown into the pages of the comics, and it likely will not be the last. However, usually this is reversed and a line spoken by an MCU actor is first mentioned in the comic books. For example, Black Panther says "every breath you take is mercy from me" to Ulysses Klaue in the Black Panther film but this is something that was pulled from New Avengers #22 by Jonathan Hickman and Kev Walker, and was actually spoken to Namor.

Now that fans have grieved over Spider-Man, and know that he is back and stronger than ever, with another movie coming out soon even, "I don't wanna go" can be used for comedy rather than drama. The Infinity War will still remain one of the most heartbreaking moments in movie history, but it is nice to see it used in a joking manner -- cathartic even. Perhaps this will be a new trend, taking heavy lines from the MCU and throwing them into the pages of the comic books to lighten their meaning.
