The Marvel Cinematic Universe could have another secret mutant thanks to Spider-Man: Homecoming's Liz Toomes. Due to 20th Century Fox owning the X-Men movie rights for decades, Marvel Studios has not been able to use mutants in the MCU until recently. While the franchise is taking it slow when it comes to introducing a rebooted X-Men team, progress is being made to incorporate characters connected to them. This has been abundantly clear throughout Phase 4 as several MCU mutants have been revealed.

The wave of mutant reveals truly began with Ms. Marvel's finale, as Kamala Khan's new origin signaled her potential X-Men future. Audiences also then met Namor in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which established him as the MCU's oldest mutant. While the multiverse has and will continue to be used to feature other X-Men-related characters, speculation based on characters' comic backstories has made Black Widow and She-Hulk: Attorney At Law other properties to potentially feature some mutants. It is possible that Spider-Man: Homecoming included an MCU mutant thanks to Liz Toomes.

Liz Toomes Could Be A Secret MCU Mutant Too

Liz tells Peter she'll go to Homecoming with him

Liz Toomes could be an MCU mutant in secret based on the character's comic history. Laura Harrier's character is based on Liz Allan, who is one of Spider-Man's love interests in the comics. Marvel Studios and Sony made plenty of changes to her story in bringing her to the MCU, including making Liz the daughter of Vulture to make Spider-Man: Homecoming's big twist really land. However, there is a universe in Marvel's comic multiverse where Liz Allan is a mutant and becomes a superhero known as Firestar.

The Ultimate Universe of Marvel Comics made Liz a mutant by having her be the daughter of the X-Men villain The Blob. While that backstory does not apply to Liz Toomes in the MCU, a mutant twist could still be used for her. It is unlikely that Adrian Toomes is going to be revealed as a mutant (especially since Vulture is now in the Morbius universe), but Liz Toomes' mutant DNA could come from her mother's side. Her powers could even have still been latent during Spider-Man: Homecoming, so her superhero origin could have happened once Liz and her mom moved to Oregon.

How Laura Harrier’s Liz Toomes Can Return To The MCU

Liz Allan as Firestar in Spider-Man Homecoming 2

If Laura Harrier's Liz Toomes is an MCU mutant, it would be smart for Marvel to finally bring her back after Spider-Man: Homecoming. She has not appeared in the two sequels, although Spider-Man: No Way Home revealed what happened to her. She is still alive and turned against Spider-Man and Peter Parker. She might not remember who Peter Parker is anymore, but the view that a superhero ruined her life could be important. In the Ultimate Universe comics, Liz Allan has a phobia of mutants. The MCU could twist this to make her scared of all super-powered people, making her discovery that she has powers more complicated.

Liz Toomes being an MCU mutant would then allow her to potentially return as part of Marvel's next X-Men franchise. Her fear of her powers could lead her to Xavier's School for Gifted Children, allowing her to train with a new generation of mutants. This could mean Liz Toomes becoming the MCU's main version of Firestar, bypassing the introduction of Angelica Jones for the time being. Liz's superhero future in the MCU would even allow for her and Spider-Man to cross paths again in the future for the first time since Spider-Man: Homecoming.
