The writers of Spider-Man: Homecoming worried that Peter Parker's suit would be too similar to Tony Stark's Iron Man suit. Homecoming was Tom Holland's first solo film as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and debuted in 2017. His trilogy will culminate in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which will debut on the big screen later this month.

Tom Holland's version of Peter Parker entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2016 with the premiere of Captain America: Civil War. This came after a lengthy negotiation between Sony and Marvel to try and rejoin the character with the other, non-Spider-Man Marvel heroes. From there, the character went on to his solo films, including Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, and ensemble appearances in movies such as Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The character will soon go on to his next solo outing with Spider-Man: No Way Home, which may tee up future MCU outings beyond his initial trilogy. With Spider-Man: No Way Home set to premiere in theaters later this month, many fans have started to look back on the character's legacy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Spider-Man: Homecoming writer Jonathan Goldstein recently took to Twitter to open up about his work on the first solo MCU Spider-Man film to address concerns about the suit when making the movie. In his post, he noted that the creative team was concerned it would feel too close to Iron Man and Jarvis' dynamic. Goldstein wrote:

Spider-Man: Homecoming made a massive change to Spider-Man lore by adding an artificial intelligence named Karen (voiced by Oscar-winner Jennifer Connelly) to the suit that Peter could talk to, as well as numerous gadgets beyond the usual Spider-Man weapons. These were all gifts from Tony Stark, and a significant part of the overall story of the film was Peter's journey to master these gadgets in addition to his superpowers. This made the character very similar to Tony in 2008's Iron Man, and that was something the creative team behind the movie was very conscious of as they broke out the story.

This Spider-Man: Homecoming concern did turn out to be somewhat valid, as some MCU fans have expressed concern over how much Tom Holland's Spider-Man has lived in the shadow of Tony Stark during his tenure on the big screen. In fact, the Iron Spider armor even became a major part of the character in later films. The folks behind the films seem to understand that Peter's journey to set himself apart from Tony has ultimately become a fundamental part of his arc while also honoring Tony's legacy. Audiences will see that arc take its next step when Spider-Man: No Way Home premieres in theaters on December 17.
