SPOILER WARNING for The Amazing Spider-Man #62!

Spider-Man may have finally found an activity that takes more responsibility than being a superhero: pet ownership. To be fair, Peter Parker probably wouldn’t have too much trouble taking care of an ordinary cat or dog, but adopting an alien that can grow into a giant monster is proving quite difficult for the Web-Slinger.

Back in The Amazing Spider-Man #43, after an intense battle with the size-changing alien, Gog, Spidey and his roommate, Boomerang, decide to take the creature in as their new pet. Using a special, homemade collar to prevent Gog from turning back into a rampaging behemoth, the roommates initially seem to be handling their little beast fairly well. They even start posting pictures of Gog on social media to bring in some extra money. Of course, the alien is still a bit rambunctious and he needs to be house trained, but overall, he hasn’t caused too much trouble.

Unfortunately, this all changes in Nick Spencer, Patrick Gleason, and Edgar Delgado’s The Amazing Spider-Man #62, when Kingpin sends a group of criminals to capture Boomerang. Noticing the close bond that Boomerang has with Gog, Wilson Fisk realizes that the best way to get to the former supervillain is to target his pet, and that’s exactly what he sends Bullseye to do. When Bullseye takes aim, however, he shoots off the alien’s collar, allowing Gog to grow to full size and run amok, terrorizing many surrounding civilians.

Spider-Man with Gog

Spider-Man arrives on the scene just after Bullseye’s shot is fired and he works with Boomerang to fix the situation. Using some quick thinking, the wall-crawler recalibrates the collar and puts it back onto Gog before any lives are lost. With Gog back to a more manageable size, Spidey and Boomerang drop their pet off with Mary Jane before preparing to take on Kingpin.

While Spider-Man and Boomerang’s bond with Gog is sweet, keeping him in the middle of New York City puts way too many people at risk. Even the property damage that Gog causes in this issue is a major reason for concern, as it could ruin several lives. Additionally, the collar that’s supposed to keep him from transforming into a colossal monster has proven to be pretty easy to damage, which isn’t ideal, especially since Boomerang is taking him out in costume, despite living such a dangerous lifestyle. For a hero like Spider-Man, who’s built on responsibility, keeping Gog in such a populous location is entirely reckless and even a bit out of character. Luckily, Peter Parker has a few options for how to take care of his alien companion.

Spider-Man has tons of friends in the superhero community, and many of them are much better equipped than he is to handle a literal kaiju. Perhaps the best candidates for the job would be the Fantastic Four, who have been sending beasts like Gog to live happily on Monster Island for years. Their qualifications don’t stop there though, as Marvel’s First Family recently created the Forever Gate, which gives them access to any point in space and time. This means that they could find countless ideal new homes for Gog, and Peter would be able to visit him too. Regardless of what they choose, Spider-Man and Boomerang need to look for a new solution quickly, because it’s only a matter of time before Gog goes on another King Kong-esque attack. The Amazing Spider-Man #62 from Marvel Comics is available now in stores and online.
