A new official Night Monkey trailer imagines if Spider-Man: Far From Home revolved around a different masked superhero. The sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, which is now available for digital download, takes a running joke and creates a rather convincing trailer out of it.
In Far From Home, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) faces the familiar dilemma of wanting to live his life as a normal teenager and having weighty responsibilities that far exceed his age. During a vacation to Europe with his classmates, the Fire Elemental attacks and Peter is forced to conceal his identity in a stealth suit in order to fight off the Elemental without being exposed. When asked about the identity of the new hero, a reluctant Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon) offers that his name is Night Monkey. The moniker, to Peter’s partial chagrin, catches on and pops up in other scenes during Far From Home. Now, just as the future of Spider-Man movie adaptations remain shrouded in several unresolved questions, a new trailer offers up a playful solution: what if another hero, specifically Night Monkey, stepped in for Spider-Man?
The trailer, released by Sony Pictures Entertainment, plays out with only a minimal amount of winking and nudging. It begins with the words of Peter Parker, taken from Far From Home, declining to suit up. “Come on, there’s gotta be someone else you can use!” He urges. And from there, the imagined trailer introduces Night Monkey as if Far From Home was his movie. Using moments from the Homecoming sequel, spliced together and taken out of context, and even editing the stealthy superhero into scenes that originally revolved around Spider-Man, Night Monkey emerges as a complicated good guy. An intense figure, drawn to the night’s darkness, in spite of the funny name offered up by a panicked Ned Leeds.
The trailer is obviously in jest, a creative attempt to promote Far From Home’s digital release. But, even without all the debate resulting from the split between Sony and Marvel, purely from a narrative standpoint, Peter might be in need of a fresh alter-ego. In the closing minutes of Far From Home, Peter is revealed as Spider-Man by an angry J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons). It's a cliffhanger that directly puts Peter's entire future into question.
Not much is known about a third installment of the franchise starring Holland, but it’s pretty safe to say he probably won’t be saving the day as Night Monkey. Still, it’s an impressive bit of editing that imagines what it would be like if the quippy Spider-Man was replaced with a more somber and silent web-slinger in Spider-Man: Far From Home.
