There were a number of clues hinting at Spider-Man: Far From Home's ending twist that Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) was actually the Skrull Talos (Ben Mendelson). The movie's after credits scene revealed that Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) and his wife, Soren (Sharon Blynn), had been using their shape-shifting powers to impersonate Fury and Agent Maria Hill (Colbie Smulders). Nick Fury was out in deep space, at a secret Skrull base, enjoying a little down time while building an intergalactic organization fans would recognize as SWORD.

Talos admits that while his performance was pretty spot on, he embarrassingly fell for the high tech ruse by Quentin Beck/Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal). But while Skrulls can create a perfect visual copy of anyone they see, Talos doesn't have the suspicious nature of Nick Fury. He's more of a father figure, not a spy. Plus Talos may be privy to certain details about the universe, like the existence of the multiverse. With this pivotal detail in mind, it may have convinced him that Beck was telling the truth. So after the mission with Spider-Man has gone off the rails, Talos has to swallow his pride and call Fury to ask him to return.

In retrospect, though, all one really had to do is pay close attention, not only to how Talos played Fury, but how Soren played Maria Hill as well. Upon closer inspection, there were a number of clues that revealed Talos was Nick Fury all along in Spider-Man: Far From Home:

  • Fury tells Peter that Quentin Beck is from Earth, just "not yours". Fury doesn't say "ours".
  • Fury has a sharp reaction to Peter suggesting he call Captain Marvel.
  • Fury has no contingencies beyond encouraging Peter to step up and be the hero he hopes he is.
  • Soren (as Agent Hill) refers to Fury as "Nicholas," a name that Fury has said not even his mother uses.
  • Fury gives Mysterio/Beck far too much control over the mission.
  • Fury overreacts after Peter misuses his Stark E.D.I.T.H. glasses, something that Fury would be more "chill" in doing.
  • Soren (as Hill) admits to Happy Hogan that Fury had no clue Mysterio had to pull the wool over his eye.

With all those clues, many Marvel fans may have seen some sort of twist coming, especially since the Skrulls had been introduced in the MCU only a few months prior. It's a brilliant twist, though, since the Skrulls weren't revealed until the very end. It's a credit to Samuel L. Jackson's performance, with the occasional slip-up as a hint, that the twist remained a huge surprise.

Moreover, if Fury had tasked Talos to fill his shoes while he was off-world, just how many times has a Skrull played that part in the past? Regardless, it's likely that Talos returned to Earth to impersonate Fury shortly before the mission in Spider-Man: Far From Home. But it sure does make one wonder just how long this ruse could have been in play.
