Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS for Spider-Man: Far From Home ahead.
Spider-Man: Far From Home considered including the first appearance of Anthony Mackie's Falcon as Captain America, but it is a good thing that they cut it. In the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to look very different. Fans got their first glimpse at what a post-Blip MCU looks like in Spider-Man: Far From Home, with Peter Parker (Tom Holland) struggling to fill the heroic void left by the death of Iron Man, who had murals at almost every turn along the European trip.
One of the most challenging aspects of this for Peter is coming to terms with the fact that Spider-Man is best suited to save the day. Doctor Strange, Thor, and Captain Marvel are suggested by Peter to help Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) stop The Elementals, but none are acceptable alternatives for Nick Fury (who is actually a Skrull). After The Elementals are revealed to be holograms part of Mysterio's ruse, Peter has to take care of business all by himself, without the help of another Avenger.
However, at one point in development, the creative team behind Spider-Man: Far From Home considered changing this. Marvel Studios executive Eric Carroll recently revealed that they almost had Anthony Mackie appear near the end of the film for the very first time as Captain America. But, director Jon Watts told Screen Rant that it was never "on the table" and it is a good thing for the movie itself and Sam Wilson's major transformation that this idea was scrapped.
Based on how Carroll described the concept, Falcon as Captain America would've appeared in the finale, likely after Mysterio died. It doesn't sound like he would've been involved in stopping Mysterio's plan, but rather arrive right as Spider-Man did it all by himself. It sounds more like a comedic gag or a scene where Sam realizes that Peter can take care of events like this all on his own. The latter is Peter's entire arc in Spider-Man: Far From Home, so any additional fanfare in the form of other heroes showing up too late isn't needed. Instead, Spider-Man: Far From Home can keep the focus on Spider-Man and highlight how he saved the day (until the mid-credits scene where Mysterio frames Spider-Man as a villain and uses J. Jonah Jameson to share the footage).
The only downside to this idea being cut is not getting to see Mackie in a new Captain America costume for the first time. This is something fans have been eager to see for many years, but especially now after an old Steve Rogers passed on the shield officially at the end of Avengers: Endgame. However, having Falcon pop up at the end for a quick scene could also undercut the importance of Sam's new look. With Falcon & Winter Soldier coming to Disney+ soon, this series is the perfect place to show Falcon learning to accept the mantle and wear the red, white, and blue for the first time. If this scene would've happened in Spider-Man: Far From How, it would be a big moment that could be rushed, similar to the scrapped plans to have Captain Marvel debut as a New Avenger at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Thankfully, this scene never came to be and allows Spider-Man and the Captain America version of Falcon to appear together for the first time down the road. If anything, Peter may need Sam more than ever now since the world has been told that he is Spider-Man and a villain. Spidey could use the support of the new Captain America and other Avengers to discredit the report from The Daily Bugle, so maybe Mackie can have a role in the sequel to Spider-Man: Far From Home instead.
