Following the announcement of her casting in Sony’s Madame Web movie, many fans have speculated that Sydney Sweeney could be portraying the classic Spider-Man anti-hero Felicia Hardy, aka Black Cat. With the surprise success of 2018’s Venom, Sony has been in search of ways to expand upon its Spider-Man/Venom universe. Sweeney has been tapped to star alongside Dakota Johnson in the budding franchise’s first female-led film, but exactly who she is slated to portray remains a mystery, leaving fans to draw their own conclusions.

Madame Web is a telepathic clairvoyant with a deep history in the Spider-Man universe. Cassandra Webb is a paralyzed blind woman who becomes stricken with a rare neuromuscular disease, resulting in her being hooked up to an appropriately web-like life support system. She is a frequent ally of Spider-Man and his associates and is even the grandmother of Charlotte Witter, the fourth Spider-Woman. It is yet unknown whether Johnson will be Cassandra Webb’s incarnation of the hero or that of her popular successor, Julia Carpenter, though the former certainly seems more likely.

There is a slew of potential characters Sydney Sweeney could portray in the upcoming Madame Web movie, from Spider-Gwen to Webb’s eventual replacement Julia Carpenter. Perhaps the most exciting possibility would be for her to finally bring Black Cat into the fold. Felicia Hardy bears a great many similarities to Batman’s Selina Kyle, and with the recent popularity of Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman, now seems a good time to give Black Cat her time in the spotlight. Fans of the comics are excited for the opportunity to see Hardy brought to life in a meaningful way, and Sweeney’s appearance and her experience on Euphoria (among other things) make her an ideal choice to do exactly that.

Much like Sweeney’s Euphoria character, Black Cat is a confident, seductive young woman with a skewed view of right and wrong. Sweeney’s appearance is appropriate for the part, and her history with complex characters in shows like The Handmaid’s Tale and Sharp Objects proves that she is capable of bringing to life the more intricate aspects of Hardy’s persona. Sweeney’s rapidly rising popularity would also serve to benefit the character, ensuring that Black Cat gets the long-awaited screen time that she deserves.

Black Cat is one of the most iconic characters from the Spider-Man comics, but she somehow has yet to suit up in a live-action Spider-Man film. Although the post-credit scene in Sony’s Venom sequelVenom: Let There Be Carnage, hinted at the possibility that Sony’s Spider-Man Universe might at some point spill over into the MCU, it is difficult to say if or when that could happen. Whether or not Black Cat and Spider-Man ever actually meet onscreen, the timing of Madame Web and Sydney Sweeney’s suitability for the role makes now the ideal time for Sony to bring her into their universe.
