Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse director Kemp Powers notes an interesting detail about the Spot's bizarre appearance in the sequel. The upcoming animated film is a sequel to 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. It will once again focus on Miles Morales as he embarks on an adventure across the multiverse with Gwen Stacy to meet a new team of Spider-People and take on new villains, such as the Vulture and the Spot.

Shameik Moore returns to lead the Across the Spider-Verse voice cast as Miles Morales, a teenager who takes up the mantle of Spider-Man after the death of Peter Parker in his universe. Also returning from Into the Spider-Verse are Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman, Oscar Isaac as Miguel O'Hara/Spider-Man 2099, Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker/Spider-Man, Brian Tyree Henry as Miles's father, and Luna Lauren Vélez as Miles's mother. One new addition to the cast is Issa Rae as Jessica Drew, a pregnant woman with spider-like abilities. Audiences recently got their first look at Across the Spider-Verse's central villain, the Spot, who is voiced by Jason Schwartzman.

Now, a week after the first look at the Spot was revealed, Across the Spider-Verse director Kemp Powers is opening up about the animated sequel's central villain. During an interview with CartoonBrew alongside his co-directors Joaquim Dos Santos and Justin K. Thompson, Powers noted an interesting detail about the Spot's appearance. The villain's bizarre look is due not due to a costume, but his actual skin, which is stark white with dark spots from head to toe that power his abilities. Read what Powers had to say below:

From the very beginning he just seemed like endless potential, both visually and arc of the character. Because you know by the way that's not a costume, that's his skin. By the way that he's wearing it you know it's not a guy in a polka dot suit. That's actually his skin. So you know, the arc of Dr. Ohnn/Spot is one that does really complement, without giving away the story, it really does complement the the journey of Miles in this film really well.

Spider-Man Punches Spot

Originally created by writer Al Milgrom and illustrator Herb Trimpe for Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #98, the Spot is a somewhat obscure villain from the Spider-Man comics. Dr. Johnathan Ohnn was a scientist working for Kingpin (the first Spider-Verse film's villain) who was tasked with artificially recreating the Cloak's powers and accidentally created a circular black portal in the process. After stepping through the portal, Ohnn emerged sometime later covered in black spots that lead to various dimensions.

As Dos Santos has discussed, the villain is probably too obscure to have worked effectively in live-action, which is what made Spot the perfect fit for the Spider-Verse sequel and its unique animation style. Powers is also right to point out how Dr. Ohnn's character arc will complement that of Miles' in the sequel, as it has been a consistent trend for Marvel and Spider-Man movies to feature villains that mirror the main hero. With a year remaining until Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse hits theaters, much more information about the Spot is still forthcoming.
